We’ve harnessed electricity, sequenced the human genome, and eradicated smallpox. But after billions of dollars in research, we haven’t found a solution for a disease that affects more than 14 million people and their families at any given time. Why is it so difficult to cure cancer? Kyuson Yun explains the challenges.

I had a dog named Luckie, he lived with us for 7 years and almost made it to 8 years but he started getting sick and that's when he caught cancer which was incurable and started getting worse over time. We had to put him down because we didn't want to see him rot to death. I've never cried so hard over a loss like this in my life because he was my best friend. I bursted into tears as soon as I saw him stop moving. Luckie if you can hear me, I love you and miss you, I wish I could get you back but your gone. R.I.P Luckie.

My Genetics professor once said "Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal". That slogan has stuck with me ever since because it is very true. It's what makes curing cancer so difficult.

Short answer: it's because cancer isn't a disease caused by bacteria and virus but a group of mutated cells hurting the body. It can happen literally anytime but certain things increase the chances.

My heart goes out to ppl suffering with cancer and/or people with relatives that have cancer. My dad recently died of stage 4 lung cancer and it was really tough, I wish luck to those who have it and that they recover soon

I lost my father to cancer last July. I really wish we can find the cure so that the pain I've felt wont be felt by anyone who's had loved ones die from cancer.

I am in high school right now and we were given an assignment where we had to talk about a disease and that's why I am here. I chose cancer because my dad passed away due to it. It's been almost two years. He had kidney cancer and we only got to know of it when it reached stage 4 so it was nearly impossible to cure it. Anyways I just wanna say that if you or any one of your relatives may be suffering from it too I pray for you guys because I truly care. I hope things go back to normal as soon as possible. All my best wishes.

edit: thanks to everyone who's replying with pretty words y'all are really nice and again if anyone is going through a close person's loss or has people in their life battling cancer I hope it gets better for you all.

I hope science could find better ways to cure cancer, with low side effect. Recently I just lost someone that's really close to me, she had bone cancer. But she also had PTSD, schizophrenia, and diabetes. Which is I believe make things worse for her, physically and mentally. She passed away 1 week after her first chemotherapy. Well, one thing I can say, at least now she can rest in peace.

And for every cancer fighter out there, I am praying for all of you (just like everybody else who loves you). So please stay strong and don't give up!

I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year in my junior year of highschool. It was quite hard feeling like I had the stomach flu all the time and having severe fatigue. But I'm thankful I got leukemia to be honest it made me more thankful for life, more positive and overall a much better person. I'm going to try to become a researcher and put my all into finding a cure for this horrible disease so no one else has to suffer or question whether they are going to die or not like I and many others have.

Cancer truly does tear people apart. My Nanna, 2 of my great aunts, my uncle and my aunt have all passed away from types of cancer. They were healthy. I only know of one family member (another aunt) who has actually survived the horrors of cancer. I truely hope one day people won't feel the pain of their loved ones being incredibly hurt and tormented by cancer and instead they can be healed and continue to live their lives. ❤

Honestly, I had no idea that Cancer was such a complex organism. I literally thought it was a cluster of bad cells that just.. Poisoned things. The fact that they actually do all that stuff is scary.

Wow, as a doctor, I must admit that this video is better than me in explaining what is cancer to someone who did not go to medical school. The points in this video are spot on. Good job TedEd.

I lost my father from stomach cancer! It was an advance stage 3 disease. We fought for 6 months with him, until one day he just stopped talking after he came from 2nd dialisis - I hope one day we find cure for this! I hope nobody goes through what my family went through
