Birth control pills are, by definition, NOT abortifacient. Let's talk about it.

This part bears repeating: You are more likely to have an embryo that fails to implant if you are NOT on hormonal contraception than if you are, simply because you are more likely to have a fertilized embryo in the first place. It's not like if you aren't on birth control, any and all fertilized eggs magically implant. They can and do miss sometimes, and that happens at higher rates among people NOT on birth control.

"you cant have an abortion if you aren't pregnant" From what I've seen on tiktok of people visiting planned parenthood for things like IUD fittings and removals, this part needs to be stressed publicly a lot more

I don’t know why so many people are against things that prevent things that they don’t want.

I wish high school biology actually went more indepth in human pregnancy so we didnt have these misconceptions.

Omg, my husband used to teach college medical ethics courses - every semester, I gave a guest lecture explaining how birth control works, and that they don't cause abortions, etc! 😳

Back around 2013/2014 I went to see my family doctor I was with at the time to ask about birth control options as I didn’t have an obgyn. (Context note, this was in a small town that’s largely of Christian faith) I asked about the IUD and he said that if I wanted to go that route with my birth control I’d have to go elsewhere because he wouldn’t do it. Said that it caused abortions that women weren’t aware they were having.

I quickly finished up the conversation and the appointment and went to planned parenthood to get my birth control. Ultimately I didn’t get the IUD and went with nexplanon instead, but not having my doctor be supportive of my choices and tell me something that was widely inaccurate didn’t sit well with me.

I was one of the ones who actually got pregnant while on birth control pills. And seeing as how my daughter is now a newly married 22 year old, if it's supposed to cause abortion, it's not very good at it. 😂

Rn I’m using birth control for my periods. (<- not sexually active yeah). I get migraines and once my period comes rolling in they would get worse. Birth control has been a god send. Bless birth control. (I have a migraine and gyno dr. and they both said that they are most likely linked).

One of the issues though is for those that believes life begins at conception. The definition to them being conception is at fertilization and not implantation.

Mama Doctor Jones, you are great, especially taking everyone’s questions so seriously, and explaining them in depth. They should really teach some of these things so that there aren’t that many misconceptions.

My Mom always told me hormonal birth control caused fertilized eggs to be rejected for implantation, and the fertilization of the egg is what starts pregnancy, not the implantation. So I'm so grateful you've talked about this!!

Love these shorts. Would love one (or a full episode) on miscarriage, in particular "missed miscarriage". This week I found out I lost my baby at 9 weeks without even knowing it. I had no idea that could even happen. And now, I'm in a weird limbo of being pregnant but not pregnant at the same time, and wondering if it's my fault or if there's something I could have done to save him/her. Missed miscarriage is not something people talk about a lot and I think if you were to talk about it in a video, at least one person could avoid the shock and pain I'm feeling right now and it would be worth it.

I have heard this about IUDs a lot more often than I have heard it about hormonal birth control. Not based on the medical definition of abortion, based on the idea that they would prevent implantation. I have heard at least one super conservative evangelical person say that any birth control other than tracking fertility is unacceptable, so I am sure other people believe that as well.

Mama Doctor Jones, I wish social media and the internet were around when I was going through all of the hormonal turbulence. My parents were so ashamed of sex, they didn't give any talk at all. I still don't feel right. I mean, your channel has to help Fems and Mens alike, because they aren't relying upon uneducated, biased, unmotivated chances of info.
