German Accusative case meaning or what is accusative case in German language is explained with examples in lesson 15 of A1 German language course for beginners. Accusative case in German language corresponds to the direct object in the sentence. Sentence in German language can have multiple parts or components. These could be subject, verb, direct object, indirect object etc. Accusative case in German language is the direct object of sentence. Direct object receives action from the subject of sentence in German language. Subject of sentence is someone who performs action and is called the nominative case in German language. The German accusative case meaning is explained with the help of examples and to answer the question of what is accusative case in German language simple examples are chosen to help the beginners understand German accusative case meaning in a simple way.
It is important to know that which part of sentence is subject (that is performing an action), direct object (that is receiving the action) because once we have identified these parts, we can apply the rules of nominative case in German language on the nominative case of sentence and similarly we can apply German accusative case rules on the part of sentence that has been identified as accusative case in German language.
In addition to the direct object, there are some prepositions which acts as accusative prepositions and if we use accustive prepositions then we have to apply the rules of German accusative case on the phrase after accusative preposition. If the phrase has personal pronouns in German language, possessive pronouns in German language, definite articles, indefinite articles or adjectives etc. then we have to deal all these according to the rules of German accusative case.
Moreover, there are some 2 way prepositions which act like either as accusative prepositions or dative prepositions. The factor that determine whether the preposition should be used as accusative preposition or dative preposition is the movement in the sentence. If there is movement in the sentence, then 2 way prepositions act like accusative prepositions and if there is no movement in the sentence then these prepositions behave like dative prepositions.
