Good tips. Off the top of my head:

1) For rooftop gardens, use sand instead of dirt. This will make it much, much easier to see your garden in the dark. This trick can also be used to "highlight" door entrances and the space next to your bed for easier nighttime navigation. However, I strongly prefer using light colored tiles (use crowbar to pry from building floor that has them) for highlighting purposes as once sand is placed on the floor, it becomes a tile of permanent sand.

2) If you build/live in a single floor base, I've found that doors seem to attract zombies much more than walls. Because of this, I will build a single tile L-shaped wall four tiles or so long to "hide" the door from easy vision. Obviously with doubled doors on the entrance.

3) Tall fences are golden. Love them and never deconstruct them. They are great for an unbreakable migration barrier. There are plenty of high fences around that you can use as part of your outer wall for ease of mind. Solid wood are better than chain link as they will prevent vision.

4) Protect your sheet rope since zombies can tear them down now. In fact, sometimes I'll just keep the stairs in. Putting on door on the bottom and one at top (need to leave one empty tile at top of stairs for ingress or they will walk through your upstairs door) should give you plenty of time to get out if a mob comes knocking. In this specific case, I like to keep some sheet ropes and a nail by each window for emergency sheet rope for escape if needed.

5) Try to have an "outside area" for your base even if it's a small "courtyard" with log walls around it or a few spaces attached onto a second floor with some railings. Reading a book while outside can eliminate the boredom of long reading sessions. Also if you are in an forage-able area, the ground level courtyard can be a nice safe area to forage and fast forward time.

The best base in my opinion is the gas station in the north of Rosewood. In previous runs I died, when I had to make a run for fuel to the next gas station. Then I thought by myself: "Why not make a gas station as my base?"... After a close look at all sttions on the game map, the station in Rosewood is the only one (I found) with a second floor. It took a lot of time, but now, this is my best run so far. ... Just one week away from surviving one year...

Don't forget about the differences between a base and a safehouse, your base should be in the countryside where it's more safe, maybe pick a farm where you can grow crops, farm skills etc.
Safehouses are smaller and more reinforced as they'll probably be in more dangerous area, they are here to store some loot and give you a safe spot so you don't have to go all the way back to your base and can even act as a second base if your first one is overrun

I usually go for a location with two high walls. My current idea for a base is the mansion in Raven Creek. It's right at the center of the map, has a huge indestructible wall with only one entrance around the outside, has a big living area with all the rooms and storage, great outside area for crops and plenty of options for escape on the inside structure.

Currently I'm in the Rosewood shop, it's two stories, has kitchen, offices, 2nd story outside for farms, Freezers, enough shelves to barricade every window and door, garage space below, multiple doors to get through to reach player

There's a burger shop I like to use at the west end of West Point. It has two stoves and a fridge, a sink, lots of counters and shelving for storage, and a bathroom with no windows I turn into a bedroom. It has enough space for lots of crates without being too large to defend. It's walking distance from the docks, has lots of harvestable trees just to the north, and the bait shop right across the street has two large rain barrels you can grab, which makes farming a snap right out of the gate. The picnic tables outside generally provide enough planks to secure the windows. There's a general store with lots of food walking distance to the south, and while it's far enough away from downtown West Point not to attract a lot of unwanted visitors, it's a straight shot east into town down the main road, with a gas station for filling up the first thing you see before you arrive in town.

Got over 300 hours myself, but I love your videos my dude, it's so interesting to see how everyone survives the apocalypse in such diverse ways. Your information is both accurate but also very valuable for new and experienced players, I've learned a few things myself from your content. Keep it up my dude :)

my current base is the rosewood gas station, and i have to say it is one of the best places. Infinite gas, second floor, multiple windows for the ropes, and a really fat starting loot.
I highly recommend it

You don’t have to sledgehammer the stairs to secure upper floors. Just dismantle the floor tile at the top of the stairs. The zombies will have no way to path-find up to you. And if they drag down your sheet ropes, all you need to do to regain access is hammer down one tile of wood plank floor.

built stairs to the roof of the west point gun store and got stuff in through the ceiling. With a sheet rope. Very safe since the barriers are intact, but still figuring out farming and fuel.

i've seen someone else comment this, but don't break stairs, break the tiles it connects to
it's much more reversible and still gets the job done

The self storage lot across from scenic grove trailer park is pretty good. There’s a car repair shop and gas station nearby, plenty of storage space, and a whole trailer park to scavenge from.

Unless it changed in b41, you can sheetrope from a fence instead of building a wall/window combo.

I set up my first ever base in game in the firehouse on the Northern side of Bedford Falls. Its got multiple rooms, a kitchen, a rec room, an office and roof access with a sledge hammer. It has plenty of trees behind it and in nearby areas which I used to make multiple walls. Its also neighbors with a duplex building which I boarded up am working on making an extension with the firehouse. So far I've survived just over 30 days.
