As an audio engineer, I'm dithering the master output because of mp3 releases and mp3 files are 16-bit maximum. But if I choose a 24-bit FLAC file as an output option, I don't have to apply dithering the right away. This dithering is similar to it because both of them apply noise and make them seamless in lower quality formats.

Another tip: adding a bit of noise often helps removing/reducing banding

Unless, this is just a comment in general. I really like your teaching style. It is straightforward and linear. You always explain what you are doing and why. Some of the lessons are so full of information it can really go by fast, but you never fail to deliver the what, why and how. Thanks!

Never really knew what dither was but always saw the option. Thank you

Worth noting for anyone that finds they can never get rid of banding it could be that their monitor is actually the issue. Monitors with a low dynamic range can't handle gradients very well. You can find monitor tests online to check this, or send your design to another device to see if the banding is present. Increasing image size to 300 DPI and adding a layer of grain will also help.

This is hands-down one of my favourite of your short tutorials to date and I now have a new appreciation for dither! I just love your teaching style, Unmesh! ☺

This is my way of avoiding the bands..
After making the gradient, I'll just converted into smart object then goto camera raw filter. Reduce noise from noise option. Then add some noise from effect option.

If you're blurring an existing smart object and are having issues with banding it always helps to add a Scatter layer filter on top of your gaussian blur, that will add a similar dithering effect and will work on any image inside the smart object!

Thanks this is actually extremely useful as I take a lot of concert photography and stage lights created tons of circular banding situations on the pictures and this may just improve my work!!

Now I need to figure out how to solve for banding in DaVinci Resolve. Thanks for yet another effective tutorial Unmesh bhai.

I always used to provide edited images with replaced spotlight backdrops... some customers complained more than others, I guess in proportion to the quality of their screen... anyway, now I always use gaussian noise on top, that way I have a LOT more control over how it looks. Also that noise makes for a far more pleasing overall image than the dither.

Great content. It's a short, to the point tutorial on a specific subject so it's very relevant.
