Nice of the boss to put it on the salesman. Salesman had it right the first time he said “money is money”.

Lawyer here. That is some very well-deserved bad press for that dealership. They shouldn't have hesitated. The fine print is crystal clear - gift cards are redeemable for Harley Davidson PRODUCTS. The motorcycles themselves are the flagship examples of HD products.

I think they realized “he’s just going to go to a different dealer and they’ll sell it to him.” Dealerships compete with each other and they wanted the sale ultimately. Good video!

Thing about the cashiers trying to talk you out of it is there is a giant scam where people get convinced to buy someone else a wild amount gift cards. You’ll typically see older people fall for it. Every grocery store I’d ever worked out would punish the cashier who sold the gift cards.

"So what do you think changed?" What changed is the owner realized the huge amount of bad publicity he was going to get for being the 'uncool' guy that wouldn't accept all gift cards for a motorcycle sale after they figured out the size of your youtube channel.

Would have been a huge PR failure from them to refuse this. Respect for the HD dealer and for you guys as well.

The salesman was right on, "money is money." You can buy a bike with change (advise rolls to make it easier) if you wanted to. The boss was the one sketched out and he has a valid point about the gift card scammers. All in all the dealership did you right and it seems your salesman probably reached up the chain to get clarification after you left. Good on him and hope he gets a good commission for selling that bike to you!

What changed is the sales guy who knew you went to his boss afterwards and said, "Did you tell the owner that he has a legion of fans?" and the boss said "whoops".

Honestly it's really refreshing to see stores, at least, attempting to counsel you while purchasing an unusual amount if gift cards. You wouldn't believe how much money scammers bilk people out of by convincing them to get gift cards to stay out of jail, keep their SSN safe, fix their computer, etc. It really is an epidemic.

They just didnt want to pay that fee, they wanted to bake it into the price of the bike aka make you pay the fee. Which they probably covertly do to everyone. Then they thought about the publicity and decided to write it off. I am actually kind of glad the cashiers at some stores questioned you about the cards though, because a lot of people get scammed and told to go buy bunches of gift cards, especially older people.

I think it's because giftcards have no fees agreement, they wanted to charge you extra fees that they normally charge paying customers. They really tried calling you a scammer as they tried to scam you. I imagine they probably changed their mind after checking your sub count.

When I worked in a dealership we had to worry about "washing money" it can happen when a person forges money then buys gift cards and spends them. The merchandise can wind up not being paid for properly. Receipts wouldn't prove anything in the instance. I bet there was even a conversation where the sales rep was told they would lose commission or even have to pay for the insurance deductible or bike.

This story reminded me of the time my friends and I bought 17 dollars of gas with pennies. No gas stations wanted to take the pennies, so we put the gas in the tank first then we went inside to pay. Their faces were priceless when we put the bag of pennies on the counter. The clerk kept telling us that we will be short, but we were actually .50 more that we needed.

I think they realized who you were and how unique of an advertising opportunity selling you a bike with gift cards was going to be as well as being nervous about someone claiming to have 20k in gift cards ready for a bike

I imagine the owner wanted time to investigate the situation on their own and denied the sale as a precaution until they could figure out what was really going on. Once you left they likely looked into the YouTube channel and talked to the manager and employee. After confirming you guys were legit and not scammers they gave the ok to call you guys back in

I used to work at big grocery store. They absolutely can do that much on gift cards. It just requires that you give them your social as well as your ID so they can fill out what is called a CTRF. They just need to report that such a large cash transaction took place, and they don’t even actually do it. The bookkeeper does it every morning. Source: was manager

As someone who has worked at a grocery store for years, this is one of the most common types of scams we deal with. So just seeing the title immediately sketched me out.
