Hearing about Kobe's death stirred up a lot of emotions. The first thing I asked was how did this happen? After hearing that the pilot flew into dense fog made me mad as hell.

1. The helicopter should have stayed grounded until conditions cleared.
2. When and if you do fly into fog, you pull UP, not down into it.
3. Black boxes have to be mandatory on every helicopter so this never happens again.

Kobe would be alive rn

As a pilot and a charter company, they had the role, the obligation, and the responsibility to get those people to their destination safely and they failed to do that. The latest news is the charter company did not have the certification from the FAA to fly in IFR/IMC conditions. The certification would have allowed the pilot to fly IFR, and would have most likely prevented the crash (completely different route), but it was too expensive and therefore deemed unnecessary. So the charter figured out a work around by using a Special VFR if they ever needed too, which would allow them to fly in marginal weather (VMC into IMC), but at the expense of the safety of their clients. If a charter company does not have an IFR cert which means they didn't want to spend the money for the extra level of safety, then they should not be allowed to push through deteriorating weather by use of a Special VFR. The pilots request for SVFR clearance was an indication that he knew the weather conditions were not ideal, and he should have turned back. A SVFR clearly allows a pilot to fly in barely legal weather in this case. This was bad aeronautical decision making by the pilot, but the company is part to blame because they should have set standards for their pilots, and enforced them just as the police did. That route should have not been taken. There also should have been a notice to airmen to reflect the conditions and hazards present along that route, which grounded the police helicopters at that time. The attitude of the pilot was complacent on that day and the attitude of the aircraft reflected that. Experience clearly does not make you invulnerable.
