The best example of this effect has to be Initiation by The Weeknd, it's the whole song with the formant shifting automated, and that was 2012.

yooo if you want to create a high pitched sped up drake sample you can do the opposite aswell! record your vocals with the varispeed slowed down (like -15%) and then pitch it back up again. now remove the highs, add some reverb and it’ll sound godlike

Varispeed is a very old trick used on analog recordings such as MJ's BAD album. Some of his hits were sped up by 4-5% compared to their original recording speed. Nice video.

The Beatles had 4-channel studer recorders modified to use the varispeed technique. Sometimes they record instruments an octave down at half the speed of the song and then when played back at normal speed, they sound an octave up and with a different tone. They also recorded songs a little faster and then lowered the speed of the tape and consequently the time and several semitones so that the sound seemed more dreamlike, for example in the song Rain from 1966 this effect is very well achieved. Very good video, greetings from Argentina.

I do that. I've been using between -1.44 and -3.33 downpitch shifting on my vocals to get a cadence while layering for a while.

Yea I saw Leon Thomas doing this on live one day a few years ago . Been doing with every beat . You can actually make 2 beats in one doing this . I’ll play some real musical stuff at a slow bpm, speed it back up filter it . Instant vibes .

The best vocal effect on earth is learning how to sing really really well without any vocal effects. Practicing & practicing till you sound like an angel without any vocal effects. When vocal effects are added to this later on, it sounds effortlessly perfect

I actually don't think they are affecting the vocals, what I think is happening is that they are using Soundshifter on the whole song. Frank Ocean did that on Nikes. His vocals are pitched up because the whole song is pitched up.

Shifting vocals down a couple pitches really does have a cool effect, especially when you have great longer vocal notes that yo7vr now brought into a longer listening time, good tips, thankyou

The Beatles did this exact varispeed trick for the drum sound in "Rain" back in 1966.

fucking FANTASTIC video. great pacing and delivery of novel information; avoids the "tutorial" format vibe entirely.
