When Betaflight won't arm, you can't fly. And that stinks. I'll show you how to troubleshoot Betaflight's Arming Prevention Status Flags so you can get back into the air.

This entire series is available as a playlist so you can find the specific reason your betaflight won't arm. Get the playlist here:

Josh, this video is just another reason why I love you. After 2 days of tinkering, this video was all I needed to get my quad to arm. You are truly an FPV genius and definitely the best source for information in the industry.

Just got this iFlight Tital XL5 HD with GPS & thought it was broken cause it wouldn't arm. Thanks to this you, I learned to turn GPS rescue mode off, or stop trying to arm indoors. You're the best Joshua. Keep going & stay healthy.

After spending close to a week trying to get my Crocodile Baby to work, this video finally helped me get it going! Thanks!!!

At 3:00 you ask why betaflight 4.0 has the min_sats parameter when you have One reason is that gps_rescue_min_sats is still used for gps rescue sanity checks. Sanity checks will ensure that it still makes sense for gps rescue to engage as a failsafe, and among other things like making sure you didn't crash and that the gps is still connected to the FC, the sanity check checks that the GPS still has a valid satellite fix using gps_rescue_min_sats. So if you're having an issue arming due to gps fix on 4.0 or higher, in my opinion you should turn on the "allow arming" parameter and leave min_sats at the default.

Using the RDQ GPS (Beitian BN-180) I get a solid lock indoors, which is better than some fancy GPS units like the FrSky Smartport one and a couple of my Pixhawk receivers.
Maybe in a real nasty steel Bando or in a tunnel you would have problems, but so far I've never even had to wait and I have 6 Betaflight Quads "GPSed", with the balance to be done soon (at least those with room and a UART available).
I'm having good luck on the arm close to the motor (that way the prop is unlikely to strike the antenna), and on the top plate on skinny arm race frames.
For the weight, these are worth having on almost all quads.
One other thing, make sure you're connected to the right voltage, most of the BN-180 (including the RDQ one) modules are 3.3v. They will work on 5v but from the word on the street, not for long. Almost all flight controllers have a 3.3v pad for utility/Spektrum Receivers, and all FCs have it somewhere, as the FX chip requires it.
For finding your quad in it's hiding place, the "My GPS Coordinates" app works great on Android phones.
Hope the hints help.
Thanks Joshua!

The betaflight solution is actually very good. Especially in my case, I use one of my quads for both long range und Freestyle. When I want to fly freestyle I take off the GPS Module and so far always had to deactivate it in the software. If I would set my min sats to 0 und fly without GPS my quad may just fly away in a Fail-Safe event (if I wouldn't change the FS setting to drop instead of GPS rescue). But the betaflight solution will prevent this from happening since it will not allow rescue mode to be activated.

Thank you! I almost put a hole in my classroom ceiling but the drone did arm. 🙂

gps_rescue_min_sats still there for 2 reasons: OSD sats will be flashing until it reaches "gps_rescue_min_sats", and rescue will be unavailable if you arm it with less then "gps_rescue_min_sats"

Good info for people. Also would be worth explaining how to set it up, verify the connectivity, and know the difference between NMEA and UBX.

Thanks for this video, I have been annoyed by this problem for quit some time now.
The betaflight option that lets you take off without any satellites and therefore disables GPS Rescue is pretty neat. I use my quad for both freestyle and long range. And If I just take of without enough satellites and enter a Fail-Safe situation my quad won't fly away and instead just fall down to the ground, which is quit useful.

it be nice if we could get led's to light up according to how many sats are connected.

Thank you Thank you Thank you, A few of your videos and i got it, the last thing thou was my gps couldnt find satellites i gave up and disable the failsafe so i could arm it, all it took was going outside and it found like 17 satellites.

It says I have 14 sats locked and it still wont arm! So frustrating. This is my only arming flag. When I turn off the min sats it arms but then I wont be able to use my GPS failsafe. Any help would be great!

I'm with Mike J from his comment. What's up with the X-class?

The reason to allow min sats is because you may want to set it to less than 8 but more than 0. You have a good general GPS location with 4-5 satellites and if you just want GPS rescue to bring it back close enough for you to get good video signal again or just good enough that you can LOS land it... Having 4 satellites is likely plenty for that purpose.
