With Tokugawa Ieyasu looking more and more like he will attempt to usurp power away from the Toyotomi, Ishida Mitsunari works hard to rally support against this threat. This will all lead to the establishment of the Pro-Toyotomi Western Army and Pro-Tokugawa Eastern Army Factions.

Pretty ironic most of the Western loyal Toyotomi army consisted out of Hideyoshi’s former enemies who he had subjugated while the Eastern army consist a lot out of his former retainers.

I always found Mitsunari Ishida to be one of the most fascinating figures from the Sengoku Jidai. I always found him and the Western forces more sympathetic than the Eastern Forces.

"The ambition of Tokugawa. The right of the Toyotomi. The daimyo from across the land are drawn into opposing camps: Ieyasu Tokugawa and the forces of the east, or Mitsunari Ishida and the western army.
The battle to determine the fate of the land, Kessen, is about to begin...."

I’ll always have so much respect for Ishida Mitsunari. He may not have been much of a warrior but he was truly loyal until the end to protect the clan that he considered his family.

Ishida only memorable battlefield skill was his logistic skill but other than that, he wasn't much of a battlefield samurai and it not a surprise why gruff battleharded Samurai disliked him but only follow his side due to loyalty to Toyotomi side.
I remember there was a Samurai clan who hates the Toyotomi to the guts and was totally loyal to Tokugawa as a way to revenge his daughter who got executed even though she only got married into that clan for a month or so.

All I see is that those who joined the West side tend to be battle hardened samurai who been in Korea fighting a new type of warfare against Goryo and Ming and got rewarded while the East Side saved up their army from the Korean campaign and only fought other samurai.

My favorite General in this Sekigahara campaign was Otani Yoshitsugu, he was already on his death bed but still managed to be in a battlefield personally (although might not personally fight), he basically cursed Kobayakawa to death after his betrayal who later died from madness a year later and his clan dissolved. All Otani men died with hating looks aimed towards Kobayakawa camp when Otani 2000 men fought against the wave after wave of Kobayakawa

“The Onodera clan, located in Dewa Province sided with Mitsunari for unknown reasons but suspect was Uesugi involvement. The Satake clan was divided between father and son Yoshishige and Yoshinobu. The Sanada and Maeda clans were divided due to Ieyasu’s involvement and the Nabeshima clan, very complicated but suspect was a conspiracy before the battle”

Thank you so much, my virtual friend. Long time listener, first time "caller" as it were. You've helped me strengthen and reinforce memories and understanding from undergrad lessons about Japan, Noh Theater, and the like, and additional historical readings regarding this important time. ⛩
Born in '65 in backwater south west Pennsylvania, Godzilla (Gojira) movies and respun Japanese anime like Space Battleship Yamato (which i knew at that time as Star Blazers with completely rewritten story lines) were my lifeline to a certain degree. You've given me a great review of the struggle for unification. Simply want you to know: thank you for all you do, o-niis-ama! Looking forward to going through your treatment of The Battle of Sekigahara and beyond⛩
Keep up the good works

Honestly kinda crazy how we're already nearing the battle of Sekigahara.
Maybe it's just me, but I think Kobayakawa Hideaki is more of a tragic figure.

I really appreciate your work. It is really balanced. You are giving credit to Mitsunari also. Great work. 👍 keep it up.

Sekigahara might be cool but the hosokawa and sanada holding back armies larger than theirs was cooler
While sanada defense is famous but I believe Hosokawa was just so respected by the enemy general that he replicated what sanada did without doing anything lmao

Long ago, the people of Kagoshima were a Jomon tribe called Satsuma Hayato. After the Sengoku period, it became a group of brave samurai called the Satsuma clan. At the end of the Edo period, the Satsuma clan collaborated with the Choshu clan to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. At the beginning of the Meiji period, Takamori Saigo (the Last Samurai) led some samurai from the former Satsuma domain to fight against the new Meiji government. After the Meiji period, many of them became naval officers.

I must be one of the fews who really prefer Tokugawa than Mitsunari. In both historical and romance point of view, Ieyasu is easily the best option.
