Guys, I'm sure there are many beekeepers on the Balkans that watch lan, and have plenty of experience with formic.. and will be more than happy to help...

I use formic acid 60% during August. If it is very warm, the dose is reduced. I use Thymol after the spring honey rush. There are no losses of queens, but the dose must be taken into account.

Thinking long term, I think the BIGGER concern is how long is it going to take for the mites to develop resistance with everyone using it multiple times per year and especially with OAE in colonies year round. Nature always finds a way....

Great great live chat. Also Brian said he was going put link in for Randy Oliver's chart. I may not be looking in the right place.

Ian is such a wealth of information! I'd be interested in feedback on what people are seeing as spring mite counts before treating. Also I'd be interested in hearing feedback on reliability of manufacturers efficacy reliability.

I will be sticking with Apivar and OA until one of these larger producers determine a better direction or product.

formic is based on evaporative area on the pad, reduce that area and you wont have that initial shock it just takes longer for the dose in the pad to be utilized i’ve been doin this for 5 years no issues. same concept of humidity in an incubator evaporation is based on surface area. can use 100% dose just takes longer to off gas just play with coverage on the pad for your area.

I would only suggest that only use formic products when you have spare queens available. If the northern areas, in the fall there aren't many spare queens available, and queen replacement in the fall isn't good so avoid formic in the fall. In late spring or summer go for it as you can always buy or use your own spare queens to replace if you have queen loss.

This was such a good video! Thank you for your transparency. It made me feel better knowing even the most experienced beekeepers are scratching their heads over how to treat mites. Great job guys!

We use Formic every year after we take supers off at the end of June. We use it full strength...2 pads for 2 deep boxes. We make sure to look and make sure that the temp will be 85 or less for the first 3 days. It has worked wonderfully. The only queen I have killed was beekeeper error...2 strips on a weak single deep. We don't use them on Nucs.

After watching only the beginning of the video, I can tell you i had the Best mites.. selected with a vaporizer, doing 5 days interval treatments.. did a great selection for mites that don't linger out on bees, but are fast to enter back in a new cell. It didn't take long to select those great mites. Now I changed my strategy and lost my Best mites

I treated a dozen hives with Formic two years ago, half of them melted down and killed the queens. The other half had no issue and zero mites by the end of the treatment. I brought this up to some of the commercial guys and they said it’s very common for Formic to cull the sick and weak hives.
