Hallo everyone (Zusammen),

In today’s video, I will be taking all about Germany's healthcare systems. Germany is known to have one of the best health care systems in the world, which is great for all of you who are looking to move to Germany and work in Germany!

In this video I will explain the 3 different health care insurance that you can get:

1. Public Health Care Insurance (GKV)
2. Voluntary Public Health Care Insurance
3. Private Health Care Insurance (PKV)

😀 About me:

hallo Zusammen, I'm Diana! 😀 I'm originally from Toronto, Canada but I'm now living and working in Berlin, Germany ☾ On my channel, I share my experiences and thoughts on living and working abroad as an expat in Germany. Thanks for your support ☮

I am extremely grateful for the healthcare system in Germany, despite some of its issues, i.e. giving doctors very little time to actually talk to their patients, but paying for homeopathy.

It always makes me sad when I see a crowd funding call for a poor person from the US who cannot afford their medical treatment. I probably won't ever understand the fight about ACA.

There is an important difference between public and private insurance: while on public, you only show your membership card to the medic and basically pay nothing, while on private, you get (and pay) the bill and write to the insurance to get your money back.

As a private patient, you pay more than double the price than they would get from the public insurance (that's why you are serviced better and do not need to wait that long).

One very important point was missed. Once you get private health insurance you will most likely not be able to go back to public insurance. There is a controversy about private health insurance in general. Some think that it should be abolished. The private insurances can raise their fees over the years while not keeping up with their benefits.

Thanks for the great video!
Some things I would like to share since I struggled finding answers myself:
- In Germany having a health insurance is mandatory by law.
- Insurance no. 2/freiwillige: since everyone needs to have an insurance, you can sign up and pay the fee yourself. If it is found out later that you should have signed up and did not, they will make you pay the fee for that time (e.g. you were unemployed and did not collect gov't funds which would have paid for the insurance and you want to sign up again once you found employment again).
- You can only get into the insurances listed if you work or hold a visa which is valid for a certain amount of time (e.g. more than one year).
- For visitors (working holiday) and tourists there are other insurances available, which are a whole different class of insurances.
- If your spouse or (adult) child makes more than 450€/month and pays taxes, they need their own insurance.
- If you are not employed in Germany, the monthly fee for the 2nd insurance/freiwillige is calculated based on your total worldwide income (e.g. interest or income from rent paid to you). If you pay taxes from your income in Germany (make more than 450€), is it calculated based on your German income only.
- There is a minimum and maximum fee they can charge for the public insurance.
- Dentist visits are included!

Something you should really mention is that if you move here from a non-EU country and you're a freelancer, you have to buy private insurance and the private insurance companies are under /no/ obligation to cover preexisting conditions. I have type-1 diabetes and when I moved to Germany I had a freelance visa for the first year, and as a US citizen I did not qualify to be on the public health insurance (which would've covered my T1D) so I had to buy private, and for that entire year I had no coverage for T1D. It sucked.

I recommend anyone with preexisting conditions to move either with a stock of supplies/medication that they need or with a full-time work contract already signed because if you are full-time employed you can get on the public insurance right away. I am thankfully working full-time now for a German company and am on public insurance and fully covered.

It is also important to know, that with public health insurance you pay only a fixed fee for every prescription drug, usually 5 Euro, sometimes 10 Euro, which could be for a pain medication or insulin. Prescriptions for children to the age of 18 are free of charge.

Also good to know: If you miss a payment for your insurance for one reason or another, you are NOT immediately thrown out of it, and they can't use a "well, this person wasn't insured during that time" excuse to get around payments, either. They have to officially terminate the contract, which can only happen if you keep missing payments. (Yeah, I know, for Germans all this is a given, for Americans it sadly isn't).

Just to clearify private insurances do not cover more if it comes to important things. Acctually there are numeros researches done telling that the puplic insurances do have a higher and better coverage than the private ones for different rasons....
According to RND, the study shows that private health insurance offers consistently lower benefits than expensive health insurance even in expensive premium rates. According to this, more than a quarter (27 percent) of the minimum requirements defined as indispensable are not met on average at the top rates of private insurers. In the statutory health insurance, it was only three percent.
But its not easy to compare them due to many factors...but definitely the puplic ones can compete with the private ones.

My insurance in the US is pretty expensive. I pay $240 a month just to have it for just me! Then I have an annual deductible of $2500 a year, then insurance pays 80%
