I've used The Lost and Found drop. Take the item to be passed to a place with a Lost and Found. Person B identifies it and collects. Person A also say. I called the owner and they'll be in here to pick it up. Using a purse, or fanny pack is ideal with Loose decoy items. Hidden compartment optional

If the content isn't large, you could use an NFC sticker as a dead drop. Could be nonchalantly scanned by just leaning up against it with your phone in your back pocket, and solves the issue of batteries.

Watch out for CCTV cameras if you're gonna use dead drops. There's 1 camera for every four people in the US.

Electronic dead drop - saw this in a movie once (Blackhat?). Had a small embedded computer with a file share that acted as a WiFi hotspot. Only needed to be in proximity of the antenna to sync the share with an automated backup app on a phone. You don't even need to do anything - just sit down at a resturaunt or coffee shop and read a paper.

I could see how modern optimizations could make this very feasable with point to point relays and store-and-forward. Most ESP32s have a facility for SD-Card/eMMC bulk storage as well as Bluetooth/WiFi with TLS1.3+ForwardSecrecy - and they are EVERYWHERE.

Tape up a rando pic of a lost dog or cat to a street pole as a signal. Very inconspicuous and since the animal doesn't actually exist, won't have to worry much about anyone calling to report they found em, but you could throw a dummy number on there to simply tell the other party you found your dog & whatever dog they found isn't yours. Your distress signal could be the "cat" instead of the normal dog.

Maybe the use of sticker's could be used as a signal. Lots of stickers are put on light posts, push to walk's or street signs and a specific logo, phrases or an image could be used as identification. Stickers aren't suspicious nor is it seen as a odd thing to have if you are caught.
