That 4/4 hi-hat portion is like a solid foundation, and the polyrhythms are like a gothic/lovecraftian cathedral built on top of it. Incredible.

When Tomas is not slaying drums he fishes near his home in Sweden. No joke

Never heard Meshuggah, doesn’t listen to metal, immediately gets the disgusted heavy face when you hear a brutal part of the song! Brutal Face it’s a thing!!

Fun fact: during their live shows, they have a light guy who literally pushes buttons in sync with the music to control the lights, rather than programming the light to the click tracks or something. At least that's what they've been doing. They're an incredible band to watch live and even more intense than what you saw in this video!

The key to understanding Meshuggah's vocals, at least, is that, like the guitars, it's treated more as a percussive, rhythmic instrument.

Finally someone doing a song other than “Bleed.”

I’m sure Thomas Haake has a different brain for each limb. His talent and ability are just out of this world. The worst part is how easy he makes it look

He’s a killer drummer.
Not enough people in the world appreciate how insane metal is, the skill required to play this kinda of stuff is crazy.

The key to greatness of Tomas Haake is its all polyrhythms, yet his right hand hi-hats always stay in 4/4 so you can still headbang to it. that right hand is as solid as a rock.

I love how he swings his ghost notes with more velocity than a lot of drummers power strokes!

Just in case you didn't already think Tomas was talented enough, he writes the majority of Meshuggah's lyrics. He also writes some of the guitar riffs using recording software and samples and stuff like that and he once built a bass guitar from scratch even though he has absolutely no idea of how to play a bass guitar.
Basically he is an absolute legend, hahaha.

This, ladies and gentlemen, it's what we call a "CLEAN" drum performance. Tomas unbelievable as always.

I agree with everybody that suggests that you should react to The Legendary Bleed but god damn Clockworks tramples Bleed from an overall drumming point of view.

Thomas Haawke is the ulitmate evolution of a drummer. Jazz time signatures in EACH LIMB and an ability to double bass with the guitar incredible and I HAVE to see them live at least once. Legendary.

Loved the calm insightful reaction. Respect for someone not used to this music. As a long time Meshuggah fan, while MANY will recommend you the infamous ‘stamina miracle’ Bleed, I’d personally say check out Dancers to a Discordant System. It highlights one of Thomas’ absolute strengths: slower cyclical grooves that are downright danceable. I’ve met them and ‘groove metal’ is a description they gave their blessing, rather than ‘math metal’ which they dislike, meshuggah’s all about feel, not calculating.

iconic ‘old’ gems that highlights the same groovey quality of Thomas are New Millenium Cynanide Christ and Rational Gaze. They started out as more thrashy and every album explores their trendsetting 8string guitar sound in a new way.

On a sidenote: thomas also writes the lyrics and they have fantastic ones. Meshuggah’s worth delving into, have fun!

Funny that you wore a jacket that says "Chile." Chile is renowned for having the best crowds at Meshuggah live shows.

I appreciate this dude being legit instead of trying to stop every 10 seconds and explain it how he likes whatever, this is badass the kind of music you just shut up and listen to

I saw Tool and Meshuggah on tour years ago. Danny and Tomas just put on such a master class that night.

You should do animals as leaders drummer Matt garstka playing ectogenesis.

I don't think there's any words to describe exactly what Tomas plays. He's in a completely different realm of existence behind a kit. An absolute joy to watch and listen to.
