Burying beetle offspring actually have to have a 2-fold strategy. They have to beg the most for food but beg too much and mom gets annoyed and eats you herself. It's thought it's meant to make them beg more "honestly" (I know, anthropomorphism and whatnot). Meaning they should beg often but only when really hungry and not just trying to get extra food. It's a rather delicate balance to beg enough to be fed but not so much that mom gets aggravated and snarfs you down too. Such a complex behavior for an insect.

When I was 11 or 12 I owned a rat, I named her Marcella. My mother and I did not know she was pregnant already and ended up giving birth to nine pups. I was so happy she had babies so I can watch how she raised them before I gave them to a pet store. Buuuut, she ended up eating all 9 of her babies. 😭😭 I was so heartbroken but I think our family cat was bothering her too much. I always made sure her food bowl and water was full everyday 😢 she lived for another 3yrs before she passed of old age. Very calm pet, but the parenting style she had caught be off guard 🥴

Yep. The zoo workers that work with pandas do a trade off with both cubs. Taking one and replacing it with another. 😂 That way she cares for both of them and they have similar upbringing

As a veterinarian I can say that some of my animal patients make way better parents than their human owners.

That's why mama bears are so protective of their cubs.

Actually I've heard of lionesses trying to hide their cubs from the new male. And sometimes after that fails they'll adopt whatever young prey animal they find next, although it usually ends up suffering the same fate. So sad. They really do want to keep their babies.

Wow, these are almost as bad as some humans. I think portions of my childhood and youth was told in this report. It certainly explains a lot.

1:08 whenever there are claims that the mail of a species is actually the one who gets pregnant and/or gives birth, I always have to wonder if the scientist just had it wrong about which one was mail and which one was female.

Animals are wild creatures that do what their instincts tell them. Yes, these are sad stories of what happens to so many animal babies. Still, the cruelest and most horrifyingly dangerous creature to ever walk the earth is the human being. Far worse than any animal parent who devours their offspring.

I had a pair of rabbits as a kid. We were told they were both females when we got them, but one day I went to clean the cage & as I scooped out the shavings, I found what I first thought were dead mice in them. I was a kid & they looked like mice to me. But once I realized it didn't make any sense for a bunch of mice to be in their cage, I figured out they were babies. Twice the mother gave birth & then buried the babies in the wood shavings—obviously not interested in caring for them--while dad would eat some of them. After the second time this happened, we decided that from then on we had to keep the 2 rabbits in separate cages. Our neighbor who raised rabbits said that some rabbits just weren't cut out to be mothers.

Quokkas don't "literally throw" their babies, Mike. They loosen the muscles in their pouch so that the baby may fall out and hope the predator is distracted by the screaming, flailing thing; but they don't wind up like a Yankees pitcher and lob their infant at predators. It's much easier to "start from scratch" closer to the beginning and grow a new baby than it is to start with a baby and grow it into a breeding age adult.

Turtles bury their eggs and the poor babies have to fend for themselves!😢 At least help your babies get to the water!

Congrats Mike. You made me play the Google game.

I also hate broccoli (along with Brussels sprouts.) I love cauliflower, though.

= Cuckoo is pronounced coo-coo
= House sparrows are an introduced species that displace local sparrows like White-crowned Sparrows in the west and White-throated Sparrows east of the Mississippi River, so anything bad that happens to them is good news
= Broccoli is definitely gross. Also, asparagus, cauliflower, and anything else that’s not green beans or beets…
