Effect of Focal Length

The focal length lens you choose to use can dramatically affect the resulting photograph, not just in framing and composition, but also in distortion. This video will demonstrate how the different focal lengths change the way a portrait is rendered, and how the apparent distance from your subject. All of the images were taken at f/5.6.

I don't often shoot portraits but when I do I use my Rolleiflex as I love the way the 80mm lens renders people on 6x6 and for digital full frame I often tend to shoot at 135mm for portraits. Although I do enjoy using a wide angle and flash on medium format closeup as it produces press type images that are not very flattering for the subject but are interesting for the photographers. Really enjoying the videos keep them coming. All the best from Liverpool.

Hi, I just wanted to drop a quick note to say that I find your videos in general very informative. I also appreciate the fact that you are not derivative and present new information rather than just rehashing. Keep it up and thanks. Oh, and where did you get that t-shirt?!! That is great - must have...

Clever video a great way to teach what is taken for granted. Was funny watching how small you shrunk towards end of the video

What I would like to see in such comparison is when you are standing in the same place, perspective of you as a model is not changing and you are moving the camera back with changing focal length. Should the size of the tree in the background change comparing to you ? (probably it should be bigger... )

I noticed that above 100 millimeters DOF narrowness at wide apertures when the head fills the frame is extreme, the tip of the nose, and ears are blurry.

You're not demonstrating focal length effecting it. You're demonstrating how distance from the lens impacts the shot.
