This looks stupid, but if you’re in a position where you can’t run away, and when you actually watch the other competitors and how they did, this is a reasonably solid way to handle a knife attack and protect your vital organs.

The classic "Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki" setup

That femoral artery was getting sliced. I believe that would be fatal if this were real.

I think this is a symptom of the rules. Like, I highly doubt Jordon would do this if someone actually attacked him with a knife. It seems to be more about giving himself the best chance of getting the highest amount of points (and he did do better than most of the other competitors in this challenge).

I agree with what icy mike said about this, and he did better than people who stood so the proofs all there

This guy took "just run away bro" in the complete opposite direction. "Let me sit down instead"

At first I was thinking that pulling guard would probably be the worst thing you could possibly do in a real situation where it doesn't end after 20 seconds, because you cannot escape nor really take the attacker down and you don't know if the attacker has friends. But tbh, prolonging and simply surviving for extended time while attracting audience might be the play in most situations because the attacker more likely than not doesn't want to get seen or caught. It's either a quick win for either participant or the attacker flees unless they're a junkie or something.

Create distance. Sitting down creates alot of distance from the knife and his upper body, and getting stabbed in the legs isn't nearly as bad as getting stabbed in the torso. It also makes the attacker have to lean over, putting him off balance and allows the defender to upkick. He even kicked the knife out of his hand. I guess the but scoot is a good self defense move if it's just you and one knife attacker.

A lot of people who have never been attacked by someone with a knife and have never even sparred will have strong opinions about this.

I think it only "worked" cause it isn't a real knife. First deep cuts would stop him almost immediatly, even non fatal cuts...
Getting stabbed isn't joke, folks.
Maybe, if he kicked the knees could be a strategy in real world, but how could he apply that in a simulation without hurting his opponent?
That's one of the problems with USDC: there are techniques that would stop the attack in real life but can't be used in the tournament without putting the "assailant" in real danger like attacking the groin, the knees or just doing full force strikes like Natan did.
Natan almost sent his opponent to the hospital lol

We are watching it work, so clearly pulling guard in a knife fight can work.
It’s worth remembering though that this is a high level BJJ black belt, with good physical conditioning, and 5+ years of striking experience, and he was still only successful 2/5 rounds. The average joe who does BJJ is likely to see far worse results. Same can be said of the other combatants here too though; Jesse for example is perhaps the best representative of Karate you could ask for, and he did no better (he used the atomic bear pen, so technically he had to use a weapon to survive as well as Jordan did). Ranton scored the same number of successes, with only a year of BJJ, and he mentions his boxing coach, so I’m guessing a year of boxing as well. Only Natan actually did better, and he is a pro UFC fighter, but we can’t all be pro fighters. Conclusion: can you pull guard in a knife fight and win? Sure it’s possible, delusional to say otherwise while the evidence stares us in the face. Is it a magical strategy that any BJJ hobbyist should default to in a knife fight? Nope, average Joe will probably get better results with one good year of BJJ and boxing. If you are genuinely interested in knife defense, the best strategy remains to stay strapped. Stay safe yall. ✌️

But you can't kick like that if you got stabbed or cut in the leg.
