I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a husband having the final say in nearly all purchases (obviously not including cheap stuff, unless your wife has a problem with hoarding or smth). The issue is when a weak man lets the power get to his head.

Some relationships are setup traditionally where the man pays for everything. Following your logic, if a man buys new clothes using his money in this case then he’d be a financial infidel yet he’s fulfilling his obligations upon his spouse by providing her her living expenses and treating himself with his income without need for approval. Personally, I don’t see a problem with this and maybe you don’t too but I would deem this completely reasonable.

That said, naturally in traditional marriages the wife would follow the word of her husband but if she didn’t appreciate his treatment and believed she was so unhappy with his authority then she can divorce. “A power play, ” frame can be used in a bad or good situation. A husband telling his wife not to go somewhere because he knows the area is more dangerous than she thinks and he’s busy working late that night would be power playing because he’s her protector but he’s doing good by fulfilling his duty unto her.
