Attic TV Antenna vs. Outdoor TV Antenna Setup

This video highlights the differences between mounting a TV antenna in your attic vs mounting it outside the traditional way. Indoor antennas do not do the best job picking up signals so purchasing an outdoor TV antenna and placing it in the attic is a great option to pick up more channels.

Thanks Antenna Man for all your technical knowledge that your videos show, I have used one of the best antenna(HD7694A) before in my attic with regular asphalt shingles with great results. I was pleased to see that antenna(HD7694A) is still mentioned in your videos. My latest install was in a Florida home, new construction which includes concrete shingles. I was able to use preamp plus power supply with the antenna (HD7694A) and pull in Tampa stations which according to the website are 60 miles away even with the concrete shingles degrading the signal some amount. Made my wife happy, we have the major networks, mostly for a bit of news, etc. Keep up the good work!! PS> tried an interior antenna but the concrete block walls of the home just made it terrible.

Short and to the point. Thank you. Looking forward to the grounding video.

Back in the early nineties I received an Archer from Radio Shack as a gift. It was one of those really huge ones. A good 20 feet wide and about 20 feet tall. I put it together in the attic and it still lays there today. I get about 70 channels with that thing.

It all depends on your location and the install options that you have but when all is said and done installing a TV antenna outside at the highest point possible is still the best.

Good to know Thanks. I have an existing one from 1980 and i might try to fix it. still looks good.

I got one set up in my attic and one outdoors on my roof eve. My outdoor antenna goes to my Tablo and the attic antenna goes to the converter box on the living room TV that I use as a backup if I have an internet outage. Get better reception with my outdoor antenna but both work really good.

Yes is true, installing Tv antenna in Attic Will Obstruct and Degrade Reception.

Sometimes an antenna can "see" the signals better through a gable wall than through the slant where there are asphalt shingles. That's because gravel in those shingles can act as though earth. If that gable end has foil-facing, all bets may be off. A site survey takes time. Don't just try one location, because five feet in either direction can make a big difference.

Thanks! I live near Charlotte and stream DirectTV Now. They don’t carry any local PBS (jerks!) so I go OTA to get them. Sharing your knowledge is very helpful.

Outdoor antennas should always be grounded but it's probably save enough not to ground an attic antenna (unless it's right in front of a skylight). If your house does get struck it's the power surge over your power lines that are likely to cause damage.

And the size of the attic space can vary, particularly on older houses, so a pole may not be necessary or even fit.

I had a TV antenna in my attic that I'd bought years ago to improve FM reception. Not listening to much FM anymore (too many commercials & talk radio these days!), so I repurposed it back to television duty. It works great, just a simple antenna on a wood stand with coaxial cable running to the TV in the room below it. It gets +60 channels. no metal parts in the roof structure to interfere with reception, and rain soaking the roof doesn't seem to degrade signal reception either. I probably should ground it, at least the coaxial cable. I didn't do that at first due to a grounded metal chimney cap near the front of the house and the utility pole at the back alley are both higher than the top-most part of the roof.

I love all your videos. Very very helpful and you are so right about the wife complaining about the antenna on the roof. LOL.

I have my antenna mounted in the attic and has been there since the 90's. I'm about 55-60 miles from the broadcast towers and pick up 22 channels. Rarely do I loose signal.

I am getting some pixeation onsome channels but they are watchable. I use a clearstream antenna in the attic. I have it split to use two tvs. Should I use a powered two way splitter or a preamp. I have an antenna craft pretty amp model 10g201 from an old antenna. Would that work to boost signals using a normal 2 way splitter or is the powered splitter instead of a preamp better.

Haha! Wife voice. Good video. You just described us, although it wasn't ME that was complaining about what it looked like. ;P
