Japan has world class customer service across all industries. In the world of books, that involves putting book covers on all books and magazines that customers purchase, for both privacy and marketing purposes, not to mention it protects the book, of course.

I've once read someone said, "When you see someone reading book you love, it's as if the book was recommending you a friend"

This is actually a brilliant idea and it should be used in other places

I’m an introvert, but I love seeing what strangers are reading in public to see if it’s something I’ve read.

We used to use paper bags to cover our school books in the 70's

In Thailand, kids used to make their own book covers for new books at the beginning of the school year. It was exciting to see the different styles and papers used for their book covers. Those good old days.😊

I’m a HUGE introvert, but I’ll be honest, even I love it when somebody recognizes the book I’m reading and stops to talk about it.

Reminds me of that time I went to the manga aisle in half priced books and some teenager around my age was standing there already.
He didn't seem bothered that I was browsing too so I didn't think much of it.

He leaves for a while, me? I'm taking my sweet time. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye a figure zooms by, snatches a book REALLY fast and speed walks away, I was surprised, but also entertained.. turns out it was the kid from earlier..

I think he was embarrassed to pick out whatever book in front of me so he tried to wait it out

Japan is so good about wrapping up your purchases so cleanly and thoughtfully

I tried this in the US and people still are like “whatcha reading?” 😂

They didn't do that when I was in Tokyo, and I went to a couple of different book stores (including the Shosen Book Tower). They normally just give discreet bags for your books.

My grandmother used to do this, and we live in Ireland! I recently found a bunch of her old books when I was helping her get something from her attic, and they were all covered in brown paper. She said she used the paper to protect them, but it also served as a place to take notes without damaging the book. Some of the paper is covered in notes and annotations!

I love this. This is especially great if you bought a book with a grat design to display it on a shelf, and you don't want it to get any scraches. Also marketing wise it makes total sence

This is incredibly brilliant. This should be a thing everywhere in the world

So no chance of "oh! you are also reading this book, i love this book" type of accidental memories 😂😂😂

I love book covers. When I was a kid, all our schoolbooks had to have covers. Years later, a friend of mine who owned a bookstore started making them out of padded vinyl, with the store's logo on them, to sell at the store. I still have one. :)

Japan: cover my book, i don't want any awkward conversation.
Also Japan: Hire friend or girlfriend for a day, cause too lonely.

am I the only one that loves it when people ask me “watcha reading”? those are the kinds of small talk conversations that I love!

It also avoids people spoiling the books!

As an American one of my favorite things is when people strike up conversations with me about the book I’m reading. And if someone says they disagree with the book I’m reading I always say I’m just trying to understand all points of views
