How to. Hand made sign using a router, simple technique.

Here is the technique I use to get great results when free handing my router for writing. Any questions, drop them in the comments below.
*** I didn’t mention in the video, I used a 12mm/ 1/2” V groove bit in my 1/4” palm router. This is simply because that’s what I have. I bought a box of bits when I bought my router and I tried different bits and like the effect with the V groove one. I also set the depth to about 3mm/ 1/8” this makes a shallow profile which means you must be careful when sanding your piece after. If you are not careful you can easily sand that flat!****

I use a different technique by printing the image in reverse onto a sheet of paper, lay it onto my timber face down & rub the back with thinners, it transfers the ink onto your workpiece.

Lovely video. Having made some signs and varnished them (3 or 4 coats) I have been dimayed to see rhem spoil a year or so down the line (fungus/mold) I now coat with wood preserver (2 coats) then varnish as usual. Front door sign as new 3 years down the road (wet UK weather).😊

I've been looking at quite a few of this type of routing video over the last months and I think that's the first I've seen with a straight bit rather than some kind of pointed/angled bit, so that it gives vertical sides and a flat base to the cut. Looks good to me - I'll try it when I eventually get around to digging the router out & finding a suitable chunk of wood.

Very useful technique. I am surprised nobody else has asked - what id the stencil made from? I have been looking at commercial letter stencils and jigs and they are very expensive and very restrictive. So a palm router and home made stencil looks preferable to me. Thanks for posting this.

Does sanding the other piece of wood help?

I enjoyed the video thanks. Nice gentle voice over and mix of background music. I would have liked to have seen the stain going on and maybe a camera shot of the stain chosen, if you don't mind me saying? But great job and one I'm definitely going to try now I've seen your vid. Thank you.

I always wonder why so many other sign guys prefer the whole carbon thing when you can just blast through the paper and skip that step.

What router bit did you use? Also, what paint?. It looks thicker than the spray paint I normally see folks use in these videos..

You didn't sand seal before painting?

Nice work! Did I miss it? What kind of bit did you use?

Hey, are there router blade that could handle cutting all the way through some thicker hardwoods? Or would I need a scroll saw/ban saw?

Very nice technique and sign! Thanks for posting. I would love to make something like that, but I would find it very difficult to follow the lines using this technique. Apart from anything else I am not able to see the bit clearly enough on either of my routers - a palm router and a plunge router - to be able to follow it around the template. Even then my lines would be all over the place. I suppose the only option would be to make or buy a plastic or plywood template?

Good video may I ask what router bit you are using as I have to go over it a few times to chip out the inset.
