As a football player, I feel more sympathy for these than scorn. It is surprisingly easy to miss chances like this, when the ball is moving the slightest miscalculation results in these misses that look insanely bad, but really they probably only misplaced their foot by like a centimeter or less, or didn't account for a bounce or skip on the ball. Honestly, you can be right in front of goal with no goalie, but any overconfidence, underconfidence, slip, off-balance, or unpredictable movement, and you can still easily miss. People hate on it, which is also understandable; they are just used to seeing those chances scored but as far as skill goes it is just not as easy as professionals usually make it look. I personally would rather shoot from around 6 meters out with a fraction more time than take one of these chances, from a meter out when I am not expecting it. Also penalties are not that easy to score, especially if there is an even decent goalie. As long as they don't do this consistently it's understandable, and they are more to be pitied than censured.
