So fascinating. My early childhood (before kindergarten) was spent in the Lutheran Church. Easter and the season of Lent was a HUGE deal - even bigger than a Christmas. As I’ve grown up, and my family started going to a non denominational church, I’ve craved that feeling of Lent and Easter. It was much more peaceful than Christmas to me. Christmas was spent preparing things, while lent was spent (that rhymes lol) preparing hearts. So last year I decided to take up doing lent on my own. Easter itself was a bust since my entire household got the flu, but even not going to an Easter church service, that was one of the most peaceful Easters I’ve had since childhood. This year, I’ve decided to take part in Lent again, and also something called “reverse” lent. I found this idea on a blog (I can’t remember which) where instead, or in addition to giving something up, you take something on. Such as a prayer challenge, bible journaling plan, a commitment of some kind - something to help keep your focus on God. I’ve personally been studying a lot about head covering and why even in today’s culture, it is relevant and biblical. So I’m “testing the waters” per say by head covering for lent. By headcovering I mean partial covering in church at least. But I may decide to go full time before this journey is over. (I may even decide to keep going after Easter) I have also decided to give up Netflix because let’s be honest - that is my BIGGEST distraction. While it’s a somber time of year, this has always been one of my favorite times of the year.

This was very well spoken. Recently I've been juggling whether or not I will participate in Lent this year. At my church, it is almost something you are expected to do. Everyone talks about what they're giving up and at times it does seem like people use it to brag. "You're giving up pop? Easy! I'm giving up sugar all together." It's very off-putting, and while praying about it I was reminded of Matthew 6:16-18 where Jesus condemns the hypocrites for making it obvious they were fasting. Jesus says we shouldn't make it obvious to anyone when we are fasting and our Father who sees what is done in secret will reward us. For me personally, Lent was just crossing off a box instead of preparing my heart for Easter. But this video reminded me that the true meaning behind it is very special! So who knows what I'll end up doing this year.

This year is my first lent and I am going to be fasting unhealthy foods and praying and studying God's word and be kind and charitable. Like most people here I thought Lent was something Catholics and some protestants observed. I kinda already knew what it was but I've literally never heard it mentioned in my 29 years of church attendance. Not even joking.

I grew up in the Catholic church so Lent is a huge deal for us. I'm also from south Lousiana, so we don't eat meat on Fridays during lent, which gives us the excuse to have huge fish fries together on those days! It's some of the best times of my childhood :). Even now, as I don't have any denomination (I just say I'm a Christian) I still observe Lent because it's a very valuable time of fasting and prayer as one big body of Christ.
