Basilica Cistern, Istanbul REOPENS & It's Better Than Expected!!!

In this video, I show you the inside of the Basilica Cistern, which is based in Istanbul and it's walking distance from the Aya Sofia.

The Basilica Cistern was built 1,500 years ago by the Byzantine Emporer Justinianus I in 542 AD to provide and fulfill water requirements for the great palace.

The cistern consists of 336 columns, each of which is 9 meters high. The columns erected at intervals make 12 lines with 28 at each line.

On my first visit to the cistern 7 years ago, I felt the place was unique but it did look like each of its 1,500 years. However, after going through 5 years of restoration works, it reopened recently this year and it looks simply sensational inside.

There are significant enhancements that have been made from the use of various impressive lights to adding additional structures that really makes it a must-see attraction for anyone that is a tourist in Istanbul.

The Basilica is quite famous for the two Medusa heads that are used as a block under two columns at the northwestern edge of the cistern.

Quite a few high-profile Hollywood movies have been filmed in the Basilica Cistern including the likes of Inferno and one among the James Bond 007 series.

Overall, without a doubt, if you are looking for things to do in Istanbul, you must go to this incredible historical gem.
