Basilica Cistern Istanbul Turkey 2023 Virtual Tour, Yerebatan Sarnıcı 4K
Показать описание
#istanbulvlog #january2023 #medusa The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarayı) is a subterranean wonder and one of the greatest of Istanbul’s surviving Byzantine sites. Built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in around 532AD, the Basilica Cistern measures approximately 453 feet by 212 feet.
One of the best places to visit in Istanbul on a hot day is the Basilica Cistern. An underground water tank may not sound much – but the cool, cavernous depths of this immense Roman chamber are incredibly atmospheric.
With its imposing columns, grand scale and mysterious ambience, this subterranean site seems like a flooded palace, but it is in fact a former water storage chamber.
It would have stored around 80,000 cubic metres of water at a time to supply the palace as well as the city of Byzantium. At the time, it was located underneath the square known as the Stoa Basilica, upon which a great Basilica stood, hence its name.
As you walk along its raised wooden platforms, spot fat carp swimming under your feet and feel drips of cool water from the vaulted ceiling. You’ll be taken back to a lost age.
The Heads of Medusa
Walk to the back of the Basilica cistern to find two columns held up by heads of Medusa. One lays upside down, and the other lies on its side. No one is sure of reasons for this but, a favoured suggestion is that anyone who looked would turn to stone. The two roman Medusa statues are supports under two columns at the cistern’s northwest corner.
Interestings Facts About The Basilica Cistern
* The vaulted brick ceiling is held up by 336 30-foot (9-metre) pillars taken from nearby Roman ruins
* The Basilica Cistern holds an artificial freshwater lake the size of two football fields
* It’s the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul
* The Basilica Cistern is also known as ‘the Sunken Palace’
* Amongst the highlights at the Basilica Cistern are two mysterious columns depicting the head of the mythological figure Medusa.
* Historical artefacts discovered at the site are also on display and are well-captioned, and there are regular artistic exhibitions which take place on site.
