In today's episode of DnD Horror Stories, we have a story about a potential player with one of the cringiest edgy edgelord characters I've read about, and when told that some changes may need to be made to fit into a dungeons and dragons campaign, flips out on a player that was trying to help him.

DM:"wow, that character is awesome, sadly we are playing level 1, here, a character sheet, make a simpler character and don't get ahead of yourself, a common goblin can kill you."

"It's probably Sephiroth."
Pre-2023 it was likely Sephiroth. From here on out it will probably be Astarion.

Edgelord: "HOW DARE ANYONE ELSE HAVE OPINIONS AND CAPABILITIES BUT ME!"
Me: "Sir, this is a Wendy's."

Red eyes are stereotypical "danger" eyes throughout many forms of media, typically used to imply power and/or evil. Especially in anime.

Silver hair is also typically used in much media to represent mystical, mysterious, and powerful characters.

It's easy to see why edgelords would like those colours, even without a specific character for inspiration.

A rule of thumb for backstories... Your backstory is your character's starting point.

Anyone else thinking Damien will end up becoming a DMPC Mary Sue once he realizes those are a thing?

Imagine being mad when you discover that the other players also wanna play the game and not just silently watch as his EDGY, BADASS, POWERFUL LONE WOLF goes on a full quest by himself

How I might rewrite Damien to actually work:
Damien is the son of a local noble who was deposed by another power hungry lord. Before being executed, he sent his young son away to a knight friend to take care of him. This knight however, does not seem to be the valiant person he presents himself in the public and forces Damien into serving as his squire. Eventually, the knight would force the young child into serving him in wars and battles, leaving Damien to grow up with a load of wartime trauma. Eventually, the knight dies and the side he fought for was decimated by the army of the lord that wronged his family.
Stranded in a battlefield, Damien was left with nowhere to go. In his lowest of low, a devil speaks to him, promising him answers and revenge in exchange for servitude as a warlock.
Damien accepts, unwittingly playing into the hands of the ploys of the devil. His first mission? Theres a bunch of mercenaries and adventures that are working for people that also serves the interests of the devil well. Aid them and see to their success. Also the fame and renown you'll get will play very nicely in the plans of the devil...

OP hit the nail on the head. This guy wanted to be the main character, and main characters are for books, movies, TV shows, and video games, not tabletop RPGs. He should consider one of those alternatives if it’s such a burning necessity for his character to be the prima donna. Also, the edge is excessive. Edginess is like a condiment: it improves the flavor if used in moderation, but nobody wants to eat an entire plate of it. And finally, OP, if you ever read this, know that you weren’t the asshole. You weren’t spoiling his enthusiasm for the game, you were giving him a much-needed reality check. The game he wanted to play was most definitely not the game you or most DMs would run, and for him to go forward not knowing that would just be setting him up for disappointment, and setting his group up to deal with a really obnoxious problem player.

OP "Why are you even playing D&D? Just write a book! But, the scary thing is, reader, he'll try."
Player "Have you guys checked out Shadow of the Conqueror, my new book?"

As an answer to the "what's the connection between edgelords and albinism" I have a theory. Whether conscious or unconscious the want to stand out and look 'striking' but since they all are used to hearing about 'super cool' black haired characters getting ripped on for being edgy they overcorrect into Sephiroth/Garralt mode

I made an edgelord character for my most recent DnD campaign, but I did it with the intention of him being... a parody, I guess? He's a member of a gang, so he's got this big chip on his shoulder, has rivalries with other gangs, and goes out of his way to try and beat them up, but he's also pretty dumb and desperately wants companionship because he's not used to being without his gang. (He's very tsun).

As someone who got one shotted by a warlock because I got talked into attacking her by our resident chaos minion, I can attest to levelb1 being scary.but it can also be fun as you can come up with creative ways to get around things.

It's probably a sign of a good person when he sees a problematic behaviour, shuts it down for good but still goes "damn, was I too harsh?"

I told all my players when I first took the DM chair, all first time or very low time players: "When designing your character's backstory, remember that you are starting at Level 1. Don't create so much back story that you leave no room for a story to develop in the game. Keep it simple, and give them a reason to want to go adventuring."

You know I complain about how people often misuse the terms "edgy" or "edgelord" to the point where it's lost it's meaning, but then we got crap like this that really doesn't help...

OP didn't do something bad to one person, he saved 4-5 other people.

Honestly, I'd find a character more "Badass" if they did had horrible stuff happen to them, but can still laugh it off and walk their path without depending on it.

Sure, whenever that story would be involved, would be normal, even expected, that they feel down a bit, but that's what should motivate them to finally solve the issue and carry on.

Damn these kings and their epic level guards, amirite?
That said, OP is extremely patient! I would've just said "what you want is write more fanfic, not play a game, so no"
Sure, people can improve, but this guy clearly didn't want to.
