May 3, 1992 - In the dramatic conclusion of a knock-down, drag-out passing of the torch, New York Knicks forwards Xavier McDaniel and Charles Oakley teamed up to out-Dennis Rodman Dennis Rodman. McDaniel kicked things off with a nudge and some jawing. Oakley cleared the table with a solid early 90's playoff foul.

The 1991-92 season was the second year of the NBA's re-emphasis of the flagrant foul rule. Whereas the flagrant foul did technically exist prior to the 1990-91 season, it was a rarely utilized and lacked clarity. Following the Pistons' second championship, the league instituted a two-shots-and-possession consequence for potentially hazardous fouls.

In a win-or-go-home situation, the Knicks emerged 94-87 victors, eliminating the Detroit Pistons and moving on to face the Chicago Bulls.

Rodman was genius, he protected himself from a fall, pushed Oakley down and at the same time tried to act like he was helping him up, classic Rodman.

Man's game, plain and simple. That's the NBA we grew up watching.

Rodman was as tough as they came. Took a hit from oak, didn’t phase him, instead he acts like he cares about helping Oakley to his feet after he just tried hit him because he knows the refs are watching. He defused the situation and didn’t cost his team anything. That’s why Rodman is one of the best ever. The NBA was played by Men then.

Dennis Rodman was freakishly strong. He took the foul while trying to help Oakley not fall.

Looks like Oakley got the worst end of that collision...

I love how the crowd slowly rises after the Oakley foul on Rodman. The crowd used to be so much more intense before phones

For all the physicality Charles Oakley threw himself into over the years, it's outstanding how long he was able to last in the league. Most guys playing like that only stuck around 10-13 seasons getting beaten up, Oakley lasted around 18 seasons! Remarkable.

It really doesn’t make sense on how strong Rodman was for his size

Rodman took that blow in stride. Oak even looked a little surprised. He was ready to scrap, but Rodman was helping him up. RESPECT

Rodman took the hit, kept his balance and tried to hold Oak up. That's strength 💪. This is when basketball was survival of the most physical.
