I decided to finally take a look inside the Thomas Kinkade Disney Dreams Collection adult coloring book that so many people have been recommending – but things didn’t quite go to plan.

In this video, I’ll take you through my creative process and ALL the challenges I experienced in trying to recreate Thomas Kinkade’s style with colored pencils and markers.

Honestly, instead of using white india ink(which repels most other ink, ) I would of used white gesso. In a thin enough layer it would still show the lines while still being able to cover them up with pencil and ink.

Just have to say that I actually think that the white ink "mistake" actually adds to the painting, especially around the tiles. It makes the background interesting to look at, and at the same time making the characters stand out. I actually like the final result! But I do understand your frustration with the supplies not working properly over it!! :) However, I'm not sure if I can accept your apology for using my favorite movie as a test paper ;)

this is the first video of yours I've ever watched. I can say without hesitation - I MUCH prefer watching you attempt and fail and be transparent about it than only upload perfect results. It makes me already trust you to see you can admit when you fail and to see that you (and I) can grow from that failure. Keep up the good videos!

Honestly, this video has encouraged me to stop worrying about making my coloring books perfectly and that mistakes happen to everyone. Thank you for sharing this video, regardless of your results!

Thomas Edison made so many mistakes inventing the light bulb. He said they weren't mistakes, he just found 10, 000 ways NOT to make a lightbulb. He only needed to find one that worked. Thank you for illuminating some of the ways NOT to colour a page! Oh, and someone has already tested several things to whiten lines..CMW? Worth checking. Great work! Love the video.

I think hairspray now has too many added chemicals. Years and years ago they use to tell it was ok to use that on your artwork but there was not as many additives. Now I would only choose something that was formulated specifically for colored pencil as that will give tooth back to the paper. But I appreciate your honesty and sharing this with us :)

Well, your mistake sure looks better than any mistake I’ve ever made!

I absolutely hated this coloring book. I threw mine away after about three attempts. It added to my frustration and made me feel like I was never going to get better. You did an absolutely beautiful job, your mistakes included. There was a ton of depth and fascinating colors, I enjoyed watching your amazing skills, thank you for sharing!

You: "this is terrible". Me: "that's amazing". I honestly thought it was looking really good until you added the hairspray. That did make it look a bit off, but it was still a cool idea/experiment and you don't know until you try. Loved this video! Thank you for your fearless creativity. 💕

Sarah, there is SO much value in this video! Thank you so much for sharing it. You teach us it is okay to struggle and feel discouraged and experiment and do our best. We never witness that struggle in others, because nobody posts it. Yes, we talk about it, but you support and make the process okay. Also, your "botched" coloring is phenomenal to my eyes, so your demonstration here also reflects how hard we are on ourselves as artists: super self-critical. You score high points in my book for sharing this! Thank you! xx

I never fill in colouring books, I trace them to my sketchbook that has paper that can handle the mediums, watercolour marker etc, unless I'm using pencils I usually leave them blank.

It's a beautiful coloring book, and I like that there are reference pages in it. Thomas Kincaid probably used oils or acrylics to paint them, so pages colored with pencils and/or markers will never look the same no matter how talented the colorist is. I give you a lot of credit for sticking with this page so long and going the distance after your experiment did not go as planned!

Thank you for not being afraid to share the PROCESS of trying a new technique and learning the strengths and weaknesses of your products. I always learn more from the times things fail than I do from an easy, breezy success. Glad I found your channel (from your collaboration with Jazza). Keep on creating!!

i think your background was AMAZING! i can see shy the characters didn't turn out the way you hoped. (Dumbo will be great). In your email you stated maybe people love to watch artists fail based on the number of views this video has - I don't think that is it. I think we love to see you try and be human. It 's comforting to know even a professional tries things that don't work out. Thank you for leaving this video here.

I love the fact that you’re brave enough to try things for the first time on camera. It makes me feel like there’s no harm in experimenting.

I loved that you tried so many options. Thank you for taking the risks. It helped me relax with my attempts at advanced coloring. Thank you!

This book is really intimidating. I've tested all kinds of mediums to cover the illustration lines and found watered down gouache worked the best. The ink won't allow you to put pencil over top.

I bought my first set of alcohol markers and a coloring book today and have scoured YouTube looking for coloring lessons. Coloring looks so relaxing!

I subscribed because your mistake still looks amazing, and I enjoyed your proactive coaching about not being afraid to try new things!

As a perfectionfist who has suffered a lot due to my fear of making mistakes this makes me feel so much better. I want to go colour my own colouring books and create more art now. Stuff like this makes me feel more relaxed about wanting to create stuff and feel like if I make a mistake it will be ok. And I will have fun in the process. :) Thanks.

Wow, Sarah, you are truly amazing. Your "failed" Beauty and the Beast page is 10x better than anything I could ever do. BTW, coloring is more my daughter's thing, but, I stumbled onto your video while looking up pen & journaling stuff and I am very impressed. Keep up the great work!
