Yesterday I told my professor - in a discussion where he stated “if you disagree tell me” - that I did not believe white people were the only ones with privilege in this country. That I believed that white people do not benefit from a system that is solely meant to benefit them in today’s society. I said that we should not raise black children to see white people as villains bc that creates a victim hood that predetermines success.

He said that my opinion was a disgrace to black people, likened it as if I were saying black people should “stop complaining”, and called it cowardly.

I’m a black woman.

Seems to me they're complaining about Jamal's economic status, not his race. Lots of whites grow up poor.

As a black woman I was not raised with people mentioning perspectives like Ben. And I can say this really opened my mind. I notice alot of times when people say things are about race that there is nothing to back it. Or often times the situation seems to be more about qualifications, culture and socio economic status than race. What I learned is that the lack of details can often distort the picture.

I’m white and I had to go to a school in the hood my whole life where I was 10% of the population and had people constantly being racist to me. Where was my white privledge?

My father's family were Irish immigrants. He and his siblings were sent to live in a children's home when he was 4 years old. He busted his ass and worked his way up the ladder in a housing company for over 25 years. Then he got laid off and replaced by someone who had a better education and who could work for half the pay. Now he's 67 and he works as a custodian because he can't afford to live off his retirement. The color of his skin never afforded him an easier life.

In my lifetime, I hope to see more black people taking responsibility for themselves and their condition. My dad (who is black) was a veteran, a senior software engineer and he owned a school where he taught others how to code in the early 2000s. He worked extremely hard to keep us out of poverty and as a result, I was able to go to expensive private schools and grow up in upper middle class suburbs. My friends and teachers were mostly white and only ever treated me with love, care and respect. The white people who I know (and there are many) judge by character, NOT by color. After “growing up” in white America I have a completely different perspective than most. My dad taught me the importance of accountability. If you’re willing to be responsible for your own life, then anything is possible

I'm Indian. I moved to the states with hardly any savings, literally worked my ass off and now have a respectable living. In my opinion, people should assume responsibility for their decisions and not blame the institution for everything. There's a lot under your own control. You just have to set your mind to it and try! Income mobility is a real thing in the U.S. and I testify!!!

Where did he debunk it? All he did was state that it was wrong because he disagreed.

They should add a third person, Jethro who lives next door to Jamal, is white and has the same level of inequality with Kevin as Jamal - is that systemic racism as well?
