There is so much pressure to just “go to college.” I had to join the Army to escape it myself. Now I make around $80k as a maintenance tech for a large food producer. I’m not rich but I don’t think I would’ve done better with a bachelors degree…

I would think that the next question should be, "Why are the Black students being steered to those majors, and by whom?

I had a government job and had only a high school education with trade school experience. The new hired people all had college degrees and major in arts, Socially, communication, political science, etc. They had the same pay grade as myself and had enormous student loan to pay back.

Ahh yes racism is explained by bar graphs. That's what we've been missing this whole time

It’s so annoying when people just hyper focus on one little fact and just leaving it at that. And never tacking a look at why that is actually happening in the first place.

Im half black. On the hatian side of my family my grandfather was a very sucessful engineer, my uncle designs private jets, my mothers cousin is an executive at a major car company. I have not talked to them about politics or culture yet. But this is clear evidence to me the systemic racism myth is a lie when you see consistant sucess among black immigrants.

My niece's friend set off to a four year university after HS. She wanted to major in Sports Medicine. After one semester, she transferred to a community college to study Elementary Education. She's a Kindergarten teacher now.

I went to a four year university with friends who were Engineering and Pre-med majors. One is a Project Manager. The other is Pediatrician.

I studied Journalism and English, then Secondary Education. Im an Instructional Designer for an Accounting firm.

Nothing systemic here. It depends.

Almost all the black student I went to college with were only going to our (D3 school that you didn’t not get athletic scholarships) to play basketball or football. None of these kids had any change of going pro. They all majored in communications or something like that and have a mountain of student debt. All because playing ball in college is the only dream their community supports.

I was born in 75 in upstate NY. My twin brother and I were around black kids most of our lives. In fact we are still friends with a few we NEVER talked about race. It’s a shame because I think a lot people from my generation are pushing this NONSENSE. Let’s go back to hating each other for who we are not what we are

I remember going to college and having these black girls so damn proud of have DaNCe as their major and either nursing/criminal justice as a minor. My question was always are you going to dance to solve a crime or twerk to cure a patient? 7 years later most of them are unemployed, living of food stamped, or working low paying jobs they utterly hate. Everytime they need to attend difficult classes like science or math they would complain/skip then get angry when the minor had to be dropped because they didn't meet the educational requirements to keep it. So yes they make choices they later bitch about and make it our problem

‘Several confounding factors
1:College attended
2: what did you major
3: kinda job you get afterward’

So Shapiro thinks he’s so smart to let us believe these ‘confounding factors’? The hypocrisy and the discrimination is enough.
You want us to believe that African Americans choose to be enrolled in low standard colleges? They choose to major in non vital programs? And then choose at end to work in sectors that have low wages? The fact that you are good orator doesn’t mean you can speak the truth always
This systemic racism starts right from the beginning, in the elementary and high schools where various schools try to discriminate even in marks . It’s planned strategically right from the beginning to discourage and deter students from pursuing further.
And if all these intentions fail to stop the student from schooling. Then he ends up being rejected to a particular subject or college he wants to be enrolled in.
I don’t expect racism to stop since there is sin in hearts of man, but at least let’s be truthful to ourselves

Why consider all the facts once you get the answer you want?

A black gal at work is going to college to work in the social services industry. I can’t remember exactly what she said he goal was. Something like a case worker. She’s going to college for something admirable, but that won’t pay well and is monumentally draining emotionally. I admire her for what she wants to do, but can’t imagine that we are requiring this much education when you could train people in a very focused way within a year and ensure that they get hands on training at the time. Thing is, all these yuppies that go into social sciences are going to have one distinct advantage when their career path hits a brick wall, family will just give them a job making too much money for being a useless person.

I blame the high school guidance counselors. They sprinkle such good words on the degrees they promote. None of the degrees they promote are worth a damn when most high school graduates from the 90s to now go after the same degree. There is no way millions of people can compete for thousands of jobs, unless they drop their pay rate to compete with a candidate wanting more pay. Kiss your bargaining power goodbye.
