Not a new idea at all. Almost every ancient culture and religion has recognized that this world we live in is not the reality. There is something beyond our existence in this world.

Just to kind of comment of the part of having to simulate every atom in the universe, not necessarily. We only know atoms exist because we have observed them. Video games today aren’t constantly rendering the entire world it only renders a frontward facing cone that the player will see. What if the simulation only renders atoms and particles when they are being viewed.

Dreams are a HUGE key. My dreams now make perfect sense, they're just random scenarios. A few months back I had a dream about the outside of the simulation. It was a huge building with people in suits and lab coats and they had different sections for different decades (80s 90s etc.) With different objects like a museum, one section had a nerf gun and I picked it up and aimed at a random guy and he put his hands up. I definitely believe there's cracks because every time I watch one of these history shows I get an overwhelming feeling of deja vu.

When the physicists are talking about the scale of how many atoms and particles would need to be computed, they are not considering that such a simulation would be utilizing optimization techniques. The simulation would not need to compute everything, only what is being actively observed.
