I liked how the show started with Jim waiting for a phone call for what Minister role he will get and then it ends with him waiting for a call to be made Prime Minister.

in the timespan of around 5 seconds he goes from jim hacker to napoleon bonaparte, brilliant.

I love when Bernard says "gosh".

I loved how he got himself into that stutter.
And Humphrey enjoying every minute of Jim’s anxiety attack with his yes’s on the phone.

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast. I was too young to understand it obviously, I was 8 or 9, but my memory it was as soon as it finished my Mum turned to Dad and said "the next series is going to be rather interesting then"! I'd never seen them so excited at a TV show before!

In this case, with civil service assistance, Hacker successfully demonstrates 'climbing the greasy pole' all the way to the top

One of the most wonderful moments in comedy history.

So superbly played by Paul Eddington there

I would far rather have Jim Hacker as our P.M. than the shower of miserable incompetents that we have had for the last thirteen years. 😠

Not much vocabulary but Hacker says a lot. IMHO they all do.

And six years later, John Major would become prime minister in almost the same way - Thatcher was challenged by Michael Heseltine, she quit, and those who'd supported her and couldn't stand Heseltine threw their support behind Major.

I think it's highly unlikely the Palace would pre-empt the decision of the Committee by asking the prospective PM if he would be free to kiss hands at a particular time.
Before the prospective PM could kiss hands, the outgoing PM would have to go to the Palace and formally tender his resignation the Queen and make a recommendation for the next PM (which couldn't happen until the new leader/PM had been chosen). Only then would the Palace call the new PM to Buck House to kiss hands and be formally invited to form a Government.
Of course, there would be no question of the new PM not "being free", the new PM would be fully aware of what the situation was and that the old PM was going to the Palace and would have already cancelled all engagements in anticipation.

If only real life imitated art to decide the next UK PM as quickly as this show did.

Sir Humphrey shouldn't call Hacker prime minister until Hacker has been to the palace and kissed hands.
