How to increase your verbal fluency: Do you remember a time when you were asked to make a presentation, say a few words in public, answer an interview question, or speak on a certain subject, and the right words wouldn’t flow?

Instead of a river of words, all you could manage was a mere trickle of nonsense? Or worse, you suffered through a drought of silence.

In this video, you will learn five ways to improve your verbal fluency, so that this won’t happen to you again.

“Verbal fluency” is the cognitive function in our brain that facilitates information retrieval from memory.

In simpler terms, verbal fluency is the ability to find the right words at the right time or in the right situation. And, it’s a great thing to have in abundance.

It’s similar to a car. The more horsepower a car has, the faster it can go from 0 to 60. The more verbally fluent you are, the faster your brain can find the right words to speak, and the more ability you have to be eloquent.

Simply put, verbal fluency is how much horsepower your brain has for verbal tasks.

Learn how to increase and improve your verbal fluency aka your brain's verbal horsepower, so that you can increase your potential to become more eloquent than ever!

I feel like the most key tip is to always stay calm and feel good.

I'm a multilingual and I often stutter because the words in my mind got jumbled up, and I don't want to mix languages in my speech.

I'm riddled with the speech impediment of stuttering and stalling. Drives me nuts. I have such beautiful articulate ideas, opinions and phrases in my mind but the cable from my mind to my mouth is fried.

I had two immigrant parents who spoke English as a second language, and raised in a strict environment. As a result, I constantly have trouble finding verbal fluency. I get nervous that I’ll never get out of sounding like I myself am speaking English as a second language even though it’s my first.

I seem to be so much better of expressing myself in writting then speaking. When speaking I cant think of words i know but can't think of it at the time. If i type an e mail away, i have no problem remembering. Its so frustrating. I wish i can communicate better verbally.

I find difficulty most when I'm having a conversation with someone about a topic I'm unsure about. Not only do I struggle when the topic at hand is tricky, but I also struggle when I'm under pressure from external circumstances, for example I am sitting some very important exams in a couple weeks, which means when I am conversing with a peer, my cognitive load is incredibly high, leaving scarce room for my working memory to thrive, because I have a feeling that predominantly stress is pushing me down. Thank you so much for this video. It has opened my eyes.

For me the content has to be deeply food. "The greatest gifts of man are reason and eloquence of expression. The perfect man is both intelligent and eloquent." ~ Abdu’l-Baha, Baha'i Faith

Thank you! Thanks to your reasoning on verbal fluency I started to realize why I wasn't able to stand up to others in an argument. There really are scientific methods to use to understand verbal articulation..

the "working memory" is the part I don't have. If I speak on a subject with more than one point, by the 2nd point my thought is gone and i stutter and forget mid-sentence

I'm good at speaking in public and in debate, but if I have to explain some thing I'm doing, experienced, or want done, without preparation and in a mundane conversation/interview, I loose it. Barely able to put words in a logical format. It's easier (but not necessarily as logical as I'd like), when I take my time and write it down.

My verbal fluency sucks. I'm afraid it will disqualify me from some interesting jobs. Gotta practice!

I was doing a debate, and i was the rebuttal of the group. And i was doing amazing, debunking every single one of their points, one after another. Then, I tried to debunk one too many points, and one of the last points I didn't really have any rebuttal for and I just paused for about 2 seconds, and then just skipped over it. If I didn't screw up that one thing, I'm pretty sure I would have won the debate.

Overall though, I can never seem to get my thought across with words well what-so-ever. Really want to work on it, because I want to be a lawyer, and I feel like i could do very well with the knowledge part of it. But the speaking part is something I really want to work on.

It means go for your left mind more when you speak, put a power that creates a way to speak.
Imagination is great but it doesn't mean you have to go all the way to your right mind and forget everything and talk slow and shitty.

When I get angry or emotional I get stuck and can't get the right words to respond. I think I need to control my emotions like you say. This is my take-way from your video. Thanks for the advise.
