How to Strip Furniture Using Oven Cleaner | ANTIQUE DRESSER MAKEOVER

I woke up today with a mission. A mission to see if the rumors were true. Can you really strip wooden furniture using oven cleaner? I was SHOCKED by the results. I have been using citristrip & sand paper to strip wood for YEARS and this whole time I could have been using OVEN CLEANER. How to get the raw wood look has never been easier. Stripping furniture with all of those little grooves would have been incredibly tricky with the traditional sand paper and stripper products. This is the craziest DIY furniture hack I have ever tried and it paid off BIG TIME. I loved this trash to treasure transformation. Bring on furniture flipping in 2022! Definitely more stripping furniture with Easy Off Oven Cleaner to come!

We had a wood table and chairs for about 20 years. It was stained a black with some brown undertones. The thing I do love about it, it has beautiful carving all the way around just under the table top as well as on the first, top piece across the chair backs. I knew that I would never be able to sand around all of those details. I have heard for a couple of years about using easy off but was afraid of destroying it. You video blew me away. I’m going to show this to my husband to see if we can get him onboard to try this. One time I convinced him to use Cristi strip wrapped with plastic wrap overnight but he left the piece where it would be in the Sun the following day and it dried like hard glue! We couldn’t even sand it off. Needless to say, he’s not thrilled about trying something again. Cross your fingers that I can do this experiment and be as successful and pleased as you were!

Interesting! Never heard of using oven cleaner. Side note: thank you for not painting it. It physically hurts me to see antique wood painted over!

Haha, the sound of your mom running away to not be in the video made me laugh. 😂 But seriously, thank you for sharing this! I actually don't mind sanding at least larger pieces (I guess I go into some kind of meditative state when I sand... 😄) but there are definitely times when I would prefer an alternative. Especially chairs I'm thinking, those always suck dealing with....

I have the same problem with sanding things and it prevents me from buying certain pieces. I’m so glad to see this option.

The only issue is oven cleaner is horrible for the environment. I want to have pieces look this great but, I question if I'm okay using it with the toxicity issue?

Thank you, Amanda. It’s great to see different perspectives on this process. I think it also depends on if the piece is painted or just has a varnish/polyurethanes topcoat as your piece had. Great channel! Love watching you 😊

I just tried this and was really pleased with the results, I think it works better with lighter finishes/lacquer. I did lightly sand my piece afterwards. It’s so pretty now. I think I will seal with Dixie Belle flat sealer. I will definitely do it again!

Good to see you again! This is so interesting! Your results are fabulous! Like others I thank you for not painting this beautiful piece! The raw wood tone is gorgeous!

I use a little brass brush to clean out the crooks and crevices and it works great. It doesn’t scratch the wood if you use it lightly and it definitely removes the left over finish left in those spots.

Chemical stripper tends to not damage the wood fibers as bad as oven cleaner..

I've seen the Oven Cleaner headlines everywhere and was kinda horrified... but once I saw your experience I am a believer! My kitchen table may be up next. That dresser is gorgeous! Thanks for the video.
