Dark Chocolate is so Heavy Metal! There has been a lot of talk in the news recently about Heavy Metals in your favorite Dark Chocolates but is this title accurate or just clickbait?

Did you know that there are naturally occurring heavy metals in cacao? Did you know the manufacturing process and the elevation have a lot to do with the end product?

I made this youtube video that discusses my personal experience with cacao and my quest to find the best cacao in the world. In fact, you could say that Crucial Four was founded on cacao with our flagship product, mBreakfast, (which is what started my journey)!

Let us know what you think in the comments and as always, Thanks for watching the video!

I wanted to give up coffee because of pesticides and lowering caffeine. I been doing cocao drinks of about 2 tablespoons of powder a day. Would matcha or green tea be the best option?

That's all great about metals but what about the other toxins and antinutrients in cacao/chocolate including oxalate, theobromine and, if not 100% pure cacao, sugar?

Who gave the initial report? I want to know how the first person figured out that the soil contains those metals. Were they looking for/expecting it?

Which brands didn't have heavy metals?

What country is your cocoa from? I'm more concerned about the soil it is grown in. Thx!

Wonderful video! I'm not surprised but still in shock about the lead from the Hu brand chocolate. Its leeching into the chocolate from the other companies' equipment. I wonder what they are using for it to be so high! 🤯 I love the information you give us, especially the pictures! I swear by your magnesium. I need to buy your breakfast with my next purchase. 💚 keep being awesome!

Some brands have lower amounts of lead and cadmium and hence are better choices. Such as some dark chocolate products from: Ghirardelli, Mast, Taza and Valrhona (Abinao 85%). These are not easy to get in the UK though, apart from the latter.

Not sure about Hu or Montezuma. However, both have published details stating that the levels in their products are acceptable according to EU standards - yet those levels are still very high.
The bog standard dark chocolates in the large supermarket chains may have larger amounts.

The CR stated that cacao sourced from West Africa and Asia - had less amounts of lead and cadmium than South America due to the soil in Africa and Asia having less deposits of lead and cadmium.

Your data table shows 0.028 mg Pb /kg which equates to 2.8 micrograms in 100 g bar, like most dark chocolates half an ounce puts you over the Prop 65 recommendation. Your cadmium is over 10 times bars we are testing currently.

Can you described the FDA standards based on solids of Cacao? As a chocolatier I know very well about them and also the UE standards. So far I have not seen nobody explaining about the standards.
