What happens to water roots in soil

What happens to roots when you pot a water propagated cutting into soil? Apparently nothing, they continue growing just fine 🙂 I conducted a small experiment with a water propagated spider plant, you can see the results in the video.

Both soil and water propagation have pros and cons. Some people have more success with water, others with soil. I suggest you try both and see what works better for you 🙂

SOIL PROPAGATION PROS:
➡️Can be faster than water propagation
➡️No risk of a cutting dying during transition from water to soil

SOIL PROPAGATION CONS:
➡️Takes more effort, as you need to water more frequently, and monitor humidity
➡️More difficult to get the watering just right, not too often, not too rare

WATER PROPAGATION PROS:
➡️Easier (no need to think about watering, no need to think about humidity), especially for people new to plants
➡️Can be faster than soil propagation for some plants

WATER PROPAGATION CONS:
➡️Risk of a cutting dying when transitioned into soil.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR WATER PROPAGATED CUTTINGS ARE DYING IN SOIL?
When the roots are small, they have a limited soil volume from which they can absorb moisture. This is a big reason why a lot of cuttings moved from water to soil die. A store bought plant of the same size will have an extensive root system, which has a much higher soil volume available to pull the water from. You need to water your newly transplanted cuttings more frequently than you would a store bought plant of the same size, to keep it alive.

You also shouldn't keep cuttings in water for months. After such a long time, a plant might have a harder time transitioning into soil. As soon as you have 1 or 2 inches of roots, transplant into soil.

At first I thought you were implying that the new roots were inadequate... But I recognize those roots, or they are incredibly similar to spider plants... Is this an off shoot? Beautiful. Happy to hear this actually because have heard that water roots can be sensitive/too delicate for soil. Always love to experience another's garden with them:)

THANK YOU 🙏 Roots are roots! They adapt to their environment…as long as you transition gently (water more the first few weeks, then cut back to normal) they will flourish wherever they can get light/oxygen/nourishment. Kinda like people 🤷🏻‍♀️

That got deep. 😵‍💫
