In my opinion, the piano is by far the best instrument to write on. The layout is perfectly linear, unlike a guitar. Also, it's easier to get multiple lines going at once.

Yeahman. Check out the chords to all the big songs. When it comes to the catchy chourus, invariably, it's down to the simple chords. The three major chords from a key give the biggest contrast between eachother. This is why three chord songs work so well.

This is great advice, as always! I wouldn’t call it limiting yourself though, it’s more like giving yourself a different set of options.

exactly...I am also "good" guitar player, and when I write on a guitar, evereything seems familiar and basic and boring, but probably it isn't...and when I start on a piano, everything is new and I can focus on emotion...

I always start with the drums. The drums can inspire me to do a whole song

So true! I did the same thing by playing around with a guitar

These days I usually start with lyrics first. I am quite disciplined about rhythmic structure of lyrics, i.e. I try to exactly replicate the line rhythms of the first verse in all later verses. The advantage of that is that *a strong rhythm in the lyrics will suggest a musical line.* This means that the music has started to be written before you even consciously get around to it.

YES! I always try to do this and it works wonders. I’m the opposite way round to you in that I am more familiar with the piano/keyboards, but I have made some good tunes on the guitar and like sampling my guitar playing into my music.

Beyond that I’ve always found that limitations make the fertile ground for more interesting music. Great tip, sir! 👌🏿

Same with me. Really simple piano = space for the guitar to shine

I tend to write in different keys when I write on guitar, as opposed to piano...

Happens to me otherwise. I use keyboards and when I switch to guitar is like a complete different creative process and results.

Piano is my first instrument, luckily I'm not really good at it, haha.

My main instrument is bass but I also have keyboards, guitars, drum machines and drums virtual instruments. Even though bass is my main instrument when writing music it’s actually the last instrument I record. I typically start with keys even if it’s a Rock song that ends up not having any keys. Because I like to come up with the chord structures with keyboard. Then I’ll play the keyboard parts I come with on guitar and figure out the tempo, guitar rhythm and drums. And for bass because it’s my strongest instrument I like to improvise basslines on the fly after everything else is worked out.
