6 Year Old Who Shot Teacher in Class Not Charged

In my 30 years of teaching, I only had one student that I could not manage. He was a very violent, unpredictable 8 year old in 3rd grade. He threw his desk across the classroom, threw rocks at my assistant on the playground, would jump up in class and scream at the top of his lungs and wouldn't stop--all with no provocation, and a number of other things. I tried everything with him and nothing worked. After about the first month of school, I told my principle that I could not teach with this child in my class. She said, "We'll get him out." In a couple of weeks, he was moved to the alternative school that serves our county in NC. Usually, students were sent there for a period of time and then sent back to their school. A couple months later, I ran into his teacher at the alternative school and asked how he was doing and if he would be sent back to my class. He said his behavior was no better and that he probably would never be put back into a regular classroom. As far as I know, he never was. Every state needs a place for extremely disruptive students to be sent. It just isn't fair for a teacher and students to have to put up with this kind of behavior.

The parents can say whatever they want, but the facts remain. They did NOT secure their weapon. If their child was so troubled, they had no business owning a weapon. Your commentary is spot on. In effect, the rights of the ONE troubled child trump the rights of others.

Thanks again, Chris for your videos on this incident. Having one grandchild going to kindergarten this fall in an adjacent school system to the system this happened in, and another two years younger, hits home. Can happen anywhere, sadly. This schools need to watch your videos, but guess our state and federal lawmakers and administration are the ones who need to hear this and heed it.

I think the burden should be put on the parents…a requirement for the child to seek counseling…before coming back to school…the parents should pay for this…

Very nice to hear your perspective on this story. Schools have become battlegrounds, and there are no predictions as to who, what, where, when and why this will happen again. Sending our kids to school and college has become a gamble. Sadly, life as we know it now needs to be lived with more awareness and fear.

From what I understood about this case, the parents were normally accompanying the child in class. So, the school and parents recognized there was a serious problem. I wondered why if that was the plan, the parents didn’t keep the child home the day the teacher was shot?

Chris....
I agree with you and it's heartbreaking that a 6 yr old CHILD will more then likely never have a childhood that'll give him a fighting chance of being a responsible, caring, compassionate man. I do NOT think he should be with other children or teachers even until he's had VERY intense therapy. IMO the PARENTS should be held responsible for that gun being able to be in his hands AT ALL.
What in the world is happening in our country that a SIX YEAR OLD basically gets ZERO PUNISHMENT for SHOOTING a teacher!??! Next time -and yes, there WILL BE a next time-an entire classroom could be killed-teacher and all.
GOD HELP US ALL! 🙏💛🙏

However, parents are responsible for childrens actions, until 18 years, aren't they.
Does this child have siblings?
If

To Chris: This is my first time watching your podcasts, which I discovered in looking for something which would focus on the boy himself, and home life, treatment, etc. In Britain they have hospitals for "the criminally insane." Something similar to it needs to be available even for young children. You said there are many such kids. I would like for you to talk more about that. I have really enjoyed what you've had to say and the demeanor with which you say your thoughts. Without anger, you are focused on the need for a pragmatic and practical way of dealing with the problem. Teachers Unions are now striking, and some have mentioned the fact that it is literally dangerous to teach. I care deeply about learning and the public schools, so this really makes me sad. Thank you for your comments.

What is wrong with this picture? This child has two parents who were supposed to be with him at school. Why are they not being held as negligent parents as they were not with him that horrible day? Why wasn’t this child being home schooled if he is incorrigible? Why aren’t these two people held responsible for their own childs actions at 6 years of age? How on earth did this child get his hands on the gun? Why did this mother feel she needed a gun in the first place? needless gun violence, again, in the United States of America. 12:11

Bold theory, do 6 yr olds pack their own backpacks? no, so his mum maybe wanted the teacher to be gone. Maybe the mom was so depressed she was jelaous of smth.

A six-year-old child isn't going to be charged with shooting his teacher simply because he's too young. And, yes, there are currently no prisons for six-year-olds. Based on what Chris said in his video, the only option available -- and it's not a pleasant one -- is to have teachers wear conceal-carries or open-carries in their classrooms. This would mean that the teachers can legally shoot and kill a dangerous student in self-defense and in defense of the other students in the classroom. The parents would have no choice but to accept the outcome, especially if they knew their child was dangerous to others.🤔😑
