Hello Talk is really good for making Native friends and it’s free. Also don’t use romaji to learn use katakana and hiragana because it helps you with pronunciation. Like です not des-su
Edit: listen to a lot of podcasts I recommend Nihongo con teppei it’s completely in Japanese and it’s short conversational episodes. And it’s pretty easy to follow when u have a good enough vocabulary and sense of grammar.

So cool! I started learning Japanese during lockdown and I’m also documenting the journey on Youtube. ☺️ I feel like once you know Hiragana and Katakana you can progress quite quickly, depending on how much time you can dedicate to learning the language.

I use Hello Talk, Speaky and Tandem to find Japanese friends. I am not consistent with my studies at all and that resulted in me taking months of 'break' from Japanese after studying for like... What... 15 minutes. But when you get to know someone interesting (which in my case I found some through those apps I mentioned, I started texting in Japanese every single day.) Yeah, my grammar is all over the place and my topic typically revolves around food... Which is a great topic by the way. But my point is, I suggest you guys to find Japanese friends to talk to, every single day. You'll find yourself going nuts when you realize you could understand what they're asking you or telling you.

Um hope that helps someone!

I'm half Japanese too but moved to another country when I was 14 and my Japanese became awfully rusty, and I'm going back to study my own language again so I can relate to your struggle of learning our own language 😅 I really admire your hard work and I'm glad to know I'm not the only ハーフ re-learning.
Claps to all your improvement and hard work!!! Keep on going!!

About watching movies or show in foreign languages I really recommend watching them with this language subtitles, I learned English this way and it really helped me ubderstand language more and at the same time fixed a lot of spelling issues that I had. I think this rule is especially true when you are learning Japanese, you can pick up kanji easier and make you more fluent with reading and sentence structure.

I started learning a month ago, I’ve got a good grasp on hiragana and some katakana, I watch a lot of anime and Japanese stuff on Netflix! I also have a language partner on tandem, any other help that can be sent my way would be appreciated - I’ve found tandem is very good!

I try to watch as much as I can with Japanese subtitles via Netflix. I listen to music read manga light novels books newspapers etc all in Japanese more now than I was before. I cut on Japanese subtitles if they are available on videos here on youtube as well. I have changed my reason for studying on different occasions because I reached the goal I set. I needed two years of a foreign language to graduate high school (2000-2002 fall semester of my first three years of high school). Next I wanted to be able to watch anime without subtitles (did it within a year 2012-2013). Now I want to be able to communicate with my relatives in Japan in Japanese not only through text but through speaking next time I visit. I could actually practice with my mom.

VRchat is a good spot to find people who speak Japanese. You don't need VR, it's free, and you can make friends on the way.

I’ve been learning chinese since last august and having massive success. I use it daily to watch videos, read, and chat with my Chinese friends. I can understand most of the frequent words and grammar, but I wanted to know how I would tackle less frequent, more specific words like toothbrush or ball. Did you look up every word that you encountered in your immersion? I tend to only look up a word if it jumps out at me, otherwise I continue watching even though I might not understand 100%.
