I think i have a clue:
The AI probably thought that creepers are monsters and a well-known monster is Cthulhu. Search up Cthulhu, its head had those tentacle things too.

That's a Ghreever, it spawns in Manacaaat's Final dimension in flocks. Once you see one, up to 7 others (depending on the difficulty you play on) spawn just out of sight. Their main-attack goes like this:
1. Fixate on the player
2. Charge up, vibrating
3. Scream
4. Explode (small radius)
5. A projectile flies towards the player
6. Projectile causes another explosion at the destination of its trajectory
Strategy for fighting Ghreevers:
1. Locate most other Ghreevers upon seeing the first
2. Redirect incoming projectiles to other Ghreevers
Also: stay out of sight to interrupt their charging (they need line of sight) and evade the projectiles (they are homing, but only slightly).
