Ok here is some knowledge that was passed down to me from a NASA engineer who had done an oil study. The best thing you can do for your oil is to agitate the bottle of oil before you pour it in the engine. How many of us have looked into the oil bottle to see how much was left after we poured it into the engine. The darker brown oil is the good stuff that has settled during shipping and sitting on the parts store shelf.

Thanks for the vid! Watching to see how hard it would be to change my mom’s oil. After my easy Kia Soul and my girlfriends Rav4, this seems like the next step up because of the more complicated filter location. Mini’s don’t seem very beginner “first time” friendly for mechanic work. Battery’s also in a wonky place if you gotta replace that. Makes me appreciate my Soul even more for the easy of mechanic work

Thanks for this vid, if you feel like making one on replacing Countryman ALL4 S FOG lamp bulbs I would appreciate that. I can't seem to get my old ones removed thru the rear access panels.

Thanks for the video, though a few remarks. Officially, you remove the coolant reservoir (at lease remove the screws holding it in place, optionally also unplugging the reservoir). One has to remove the gasket of the oil drain screw and tighten it with 30Nm. Also, and I‘ve seen anyone mention it, in the oil filter housing, there’s a small backup valve that is spring operated. One has to push it a few times to ensure it’s working properly (and removing possible debris doing so).

I have a 2015 (27200 mil) and my mechanic hattteess when he sees my name in the book, worse when it’s sitting outside. If I go to the dealer - one hour drive each way - they try to sell me all kinds of crap I don’t need. But I’d not only like to tic my guy off but it’s always a good time to see other cars on the lifts and chat with the owners. I have to say the smart car is entertaining to watch just as much as watching my mec boil under my hood. Ta-ta!

I’ve gotten pretty good at getting the filter out but it’s still such a pain. It beats paying around 130 at a shop though.

Looks like I need a hex bit driver set!

Thanks Kevin for making this video. I usually change the oil in my cars, but my wife's 2013 Countryman All4 usually goes to an independent Mini mechanic. Your video helped me in getting to the filter and I see it's not that hard at all. Saved me lots of $$$. And I agree, all my cars get Mobil 1 synthetic, although I think Costco is going to phase that product out and replace with their own Kirkland brand. Any opinion on that?

I had a terrible experience changing the oil in my 11 countryman. I pulled out my filter and there was a spring and another plastic valve looking thing with a spring. None of the videos I watched had these springs. The plastic one popped into the filter, and i tried to put the other spring over it; but, I could not the cover down with out cross treading it. Then I decide to to just leave out the "spring" and just put it back in with that other plastic spring thing. While tightening it down, the 27mm socket popped off and disappeared into the engine. I could not find it. So tightened the the cover down best I could with my hand. Not good enough...oil leaked and I was about to get towed, when I was able to find the 27mm socket and tighten down the cover. I did leave the spring out- i dont know about that-- but none of the videos had anyone messing around with springs!!!

Rather than guessing on how long oil lasts, consider sending the used oil to a lab for analysis. I have 5 vehicles plus a couple others that I take care of. Draining oil that still has plenty of life left is just a waste of money, time, and oil. A good quality oil like Mobil 1 will last more than 5k miles. I can't tell you if that's 8k or 10k, but a simple test at 5k can sure tell you that it is safe to do so. I have a car with a turbo that can get 8k miles easily. I have a high horsepower car with 3x the power of that car with the turbo and it can get 15k miles on a very good quality oil without any trouble. The point: Do a baseline test. Then once in a while maybe a checkup test to see how your oil is doing and if there are any other problems developing. You definitely don't have to test the oil every time. I catch it maybe every 4 or 5 times to see how things are going. Well worth it.

Hey Kevin great video and cool mini! Anyways, I do have a 2012 countryman and i have a boot/trunk problem that no one seems to have a video on how to address it? Boot won't open, you hear a loud cracking noise, must be some loose connector or mechanism, no release cable, if i take it to mini it cost a lot of $$$$ talked to service and they can't tell me how to access that rotor/mechanism. Any experience on this problem? Thanks for your time! Rod

Keven, thank you for the video. My first question: is there not a crush washer for the oil plug? Second question: is there no need to pull the oil filter with the oil plug still out? I'm coming from a 2022 Subaru WRX but selling that on Saturday and picking up my father's 2012 Countryman S with 70k miles.

Great job. Made it simple. Great instructions. Why does it say 0 20 on the engine? For oil...

Hi great vid! Can I use that same filter on my 2016 Mini Countryman S All4? Thanks in advance!

I didn’t see any mention of a crush washer when replacing the oil plug. Do mini’s not use a crush washer?

When you tighten the oil filter housing, does the housing fit flush against the block?

The only thing I’m confused about is you showed a blue housing cover in the video? Then you never showed the removal of anything blue

Hey Kevin, I’m new in your channel. Thank you for your videos.

I’m in trouble I just bought a countryman 2014 and I have problems with the P00BC, P0300, P0301-P0304. I just change the ignition coil and spark plugs. The codes still appearing. I see pressure in the coolant expansion tank also on the motor side. Do you have any idea what could be ? And how to repare it?
Also I took the car to BMW because in my city there is no minicouper dealer. They told me that their computer doesn’t detect what is the issue with the car. The car is running bur I know there is something with it. Please help me 🙏
