I think the point of this improvement is to encourage us to use mass transit into Sugarhouse. I grew up just east of Sugarhouse and always hated the traffic. Now that I live in Riverton I can take Trax almost anywhere, including my old stomping grounds in Sugarhouse. This makes sense to me.

What you gonna do about chick fila causing traffic jams?

Let's see. I believe right where it goes from two lanes to one lane will pretty much nullify any other improvement. Fix that and I could maybe get on board. Without that, I can't imagine what a nightmarish waste this will be. I mean I guess it isn't a terrible idea to make it more pedestrian accessible to the people who live right in there, but 21st south is a main thoroughfare. How many people pass through that whole corridor with no intention of stopping anywhere in there? I am highly confident - the vast, vast majority. There aren't a lot of good east/west roads to get through around there. My vote: keep the 4 lanes, get rid of the roadside parking, improve the left turn lanes, and widen the sidewalk to a bike also path. Wouldn't that make all of our wildest dreams come true, and not make a closed community of a necessary thoroughfare?

It's funny that they did all the community input meetings and surveys then through out everything that we wanted. This isn't anything like the responses came back. The bike path that we spent 63M on just one block south and trax but we have to have busses too? Something is broken. The community will continue to move away so they don't have 6 story buildings in their back yard. The things that made Sugarhouse nice and cute and open have been stripped away.

Love the choke point. That's gonna be fun.

Was it really necessary to hire Bob Odenkirk to narrate this video??? No wonder these projects always go over budget. 😂

"more lanes" has time and time again been disproven to make traffic better. In fact, more lanes usually make more traffic/slower times. Glad we have planners who are bold enough to do things for all people, not just drivers, despite the hate they get.

"We want to preserve everything that makes Sugarhouse...Sugarhouse." lol you gentrified the heck out of it and clogged it up with high density housing. You got rid of the small shops and all its character. I used to love the area and now I go out of my way to avoid 2100 and Highland

Excellent! My only wish is that this would go to at least to 1300 East. It would be great to do something about those terrible drive-throughs.

This is the worst idea ever. Can't wait to sit in edless traffic now. Idiotic idea

This is going to be fantastic. Walking through the 2100 S intersections in this area has always felt sketchy, and biking across or up-down this street is borderline unsafe. This will go a long way to stitching together the separated halves of Sugar House, and contribute overall to connecting the entirety of SLC via active transit. Do not listen to the naysayers and NIMBYs, the positivity of this move will be self-evident when people, especially families and children, will feel safer and more confident transiting through and across the street. And it will look much nicer, too!

I guess this will discourage cars from driving down this road just to pass through which is good I guess? Seems like it will be a traffic nightmare otherwise.

The designated left turn lanes are what win this design for me. Traffic in that area comes to a grinding halt any time someone tries to make a left turn using the current lane designs because they're waiting for traffic in two other lanes to clear up long enough to complete their turn. That affects three of the four lanes, especially when they get frustrated and leap before the oncoming traffic comes to a halt.

Raised medians to prevent other left turns are also a win for me. I'd rather see more people set themselves up to make a right-hand turn into a parking lot rather than make a left turn and hold everybody else up in the process.

Will this be the first fifteen,
or ten,
min..ute cities?

No..thing about Sugarhouse will be preserved.

It’s already on its way to be only for those who live there.

That’s what happens when cities do not expand beyond borders. All of that untouched. desert .

Tooele for example, like a 1940’s salt lake valley.

This is a good design, and it must have taken a ton of work to get there. Lots of competing interests, lots of drivers that feel entitled to driving up to every business along the street, but now outnumbered by the huge number of peds and cyclists who demand safe and ample space. Crossing the street on the two lane section will be much safer. Driving will be less stressful without another car right next to you. It can be hard for the carbrained to see, but this is a substantial improvement compared to the current condition. Right of ways are for people, not just cars. Cars are large, and they’re the first thing to go once right of way is limited. This will drastically help the walkability of the area.

Worked in this area for 5+ years. Still do.

When I first started working here I drove but got tired of traffic on i15.

So I used public transit for over a year. Only like 5 people ever took the bus I rode between the trax station to here. I also hardly saw that many bikes and people walking on 21st.

When they expanded i15 with more lanes I went back to driving because the additional lanes around point of the mountain improved i15 drastically.

In my experience more lanes helped i15, so I’m leery of those claiming less is more. I guess we’ll see. Wouldn’t mind being proved wrong

Busiest East/West road through Sugarhouse - explain how removing 2 lanes of traffic will ease congestion? These sons of guns already removed the right hand turn lane on 1100 east to go west & it is backing that light up so bad you can't make it during a single cycle anymore

This has a lot in common with the plan they’re doing currently on 900 s. I personally am not a fan. Looks like a nightmare for 2100 s too

This is so exciting! The left turn lane is very helpful to help keep traffic moving. As a pedestrian, more crosswalks and multi use paths makes me feel much safer, and now I might feel comfortable enough to buy my own bike.

Please don't do this! We just spent SO MUCH money building up the interest in the area and removing one of the main roads for travel sounds like a nightmare!
