The relationships and the "village" is what so many of us are missing raising kids. Growing up in the 90s, I was really the last of that generation. Most of my memories are playing outside and with my sibling. We were never bored.
My two kids were 2 and 7 months when covid hit. I feel like they were robbed of so much of those experiences I fondly remember from my childhood. Our community we lived in was closed off and people got nasty and self-centered. Last summer we moved to an absolutely wonderful community that shares our values. We have a church, friends, and neighbors that all look out for each other. My kids play in the street with all the neighbors. They jump from yard-to-yard. This is what I wanted for them ❤ It makes me sad that these communities are so hard to come by now. Everyone is living in isolation.

I don't think it's any coincidence that in the mere span of about 20 years (pre-internet days until now) so many of us are burning out. It's just not a natural way for humans to live and so many of us are craving those pre-internet days of simplicity and natural pace. I NEVER remember, as a child growing up in the 80s, talk of hustle culture or my mom being crazily busy. We did not spend a ton of time together but she was there...present. We were free to be kids outside while my mom spent time at home canning, sewing, etc. This traditional life was really not that long ago and I miss it. It's beautiful and natural. <3

As a minimalist homeschooling mom of a 9 and 11 year old (and a big fan of Simplicity Parenting and Comer's book!) I've found this becomes much more complicated as the children age. The societal and peer pressure to have your children in various activities, even on the Sabbath, to acquire gadgets and toys and video games, becomes a very real force against slow, holy and whole-hearted living. The more you can be grounded in your "whys" - your convictions on why this lifestyle is the best for you and your children's psychological, physical and ultimately spiritual well-being - the stronger you can stand against these mounting pressures and just say to your kids "we don't do that in our family". Thanks for your research and thoughtfulness in providing some very important "whys".

I'm a new mom of a 10 month old son. In the early months, I experienced panic attacks. The amount of information out there is still overwhelming, but I'm grateful when I find content like this, and I'm grateful for your emphasis on what matters, especially faith. Thank you.

“Undeclared war on childhood” 🎉🎉🎉 hit home for real. I see this. I get this. Thank you! You are not alone.

Thank you.
Drink your coffee hot, do things half paced, kids process things slower… huge take away for me!

My husband and i read Hunt, Gather, Parent out loud to each other while i was pregnant with our baby boy. Now that he's a new toddler, we plan to read it through again. It's just so good and we know our pre-parent brains and parent brains will glean different facets.

Just finished watching every second of this. And as a pretty ADHD-leaning hyperactive dad, thank you. This was a treat. It was majorly eye opening, and I’m excited to wake up tomorrow at half speed. Thank you.

This is so beautifully done and so needed. As techie, gamer people and now with our kids being in an online school, our family has had a hard time reducing our screen time. This has inspired me to make some changes moving forward.

I like your statement about how each generation isn’t meant to reinvent or relearn parenting. From one hand there is comfort in age old wisdom. From the other hand, the way it’s always been done isn’t always the best way, depending on where you come from, the family you were raised by. So then you have to look for a better way. Additionally, some of the older ways have been lost in this modern world, as you explain, so we have to rediscover them. At the same time, we have to adapt the wisdom of the old ways to modern life. For example, so many of us would love to live in the countryside or even a suburb, in a house, but it’s just not affordable. We have to struggle just to pay the rent in small apartments, while still trying to provide a good childhood for our kids. Either way though, I think that at least aiming to slow down, is the right way to go.

Your videos are so intentional and well put together. I feel like I’ve gotten more insight from two of your videos than a hundred content creator moms put together 😂 So thankful there are moms like you out there who also love Jesus, encourage minimalist and meaningful family lifestyles and love to dig into the research 🙌 ❤

OMG, I loved this video the best so far, friend. I also love that your sister uses the term "dead face" when dealing with kids misbehaving. That is such a good term for it, and I employ it regularly with my son. I didn't think it would work, but it really does. We also talk a LOT about respect and trust and recognition of how others are being treated or how you treat others. These are part of our conversations with him when he is misbehaving toward us or others. In the end, I have found that these are the core values that he is grappling with or doesn't recognize in his behavior, and we like to talk about how what he does can and will affect others whether he realizes it or not. It is all about noticing that you are in a community (e.g., family, classroom, street corner, restaurant, etc.) and that noticing how you can affect others while also regulating your own feelings is all part of being human.

Normally I would skip this kind of video after only a few seconds. But I am desperate for a change and exploring outside of my box has always been where I have found gold. Initially I thought this is another insta mom, with pretty video and patronizing slow quiet talking. But honestly the more I listened(i seldom have time to actually watch) the more I was drawn to the content and now I'm about to play it for a second time so I can catch all the bits I missed while running after the baby and arguing with my kids about cleaning up their room and getting dressed after their bath...

Thank you!

The ruthless elimination of hurry changed my life and I’ve heard you reference John mark comer’s teaching in your videos. As an expecting momma I found your video at the perfect time. Thank you for the thoughtfulness you put in your videos and giving us the permission as a modern woman to just be and live a simple life. So excited to try some of your simplifying hacks.

Great topic and video. You are so right about all that you have said.

A wise woman once asked me “how to you spell love?”

T-I-M-E is what she spelled.
So simple yet so profound. Children don’t want things. We foolishly think more “things” will make a more happier child.

But it’s quite the opposite. It’s time that’s most valuable. There’s just so much to be said on the topic.

Love how you put this together for all the mothers out here.
