For this First Ride we take a look at the 2019 KTM 250SX 2 stroke. The MXA staff found some interesting traits about the 2019 and directly compares it to its predecessor in the video. With a new air box, new frame, updated suspension settings, and new body work you might think the 2019 is better than the 2018 model. Sit tight before you whip out the check books and listen up to what the MXA wrecking crew has to say about the 250 in 2019. You may be surprised with the results!

For the 2018 250 sx model test you wrote "(2) Deprive the engine of air. For test riders who thought the engine was too aggressive, we put tape over the airbox vent on our KTM’s side panel. This strategy may sound strange, but it turns the KTM airbox into a Husqvarna airbox. The hit was made more manageable, and the powerband revved out further. All it takes is a strip of duct tape and one minute of your time." KTM did exactly what you recommended and now you're complaining about it and recommend drilling holes in the air box?

Another surprising part of that test was your complaints about jetting. "In the KTM 250SX owner’s manual, it says to run a gas-to-oil ratio of 60:1. We thought it was a typo and ignored it. But, the more we struggled with the Mikuni jetting, the more the KTM factory mechanics asked us to switch from Maxima at 40:1 to Maxima at 60:1. Finally, we folded and put the stock jetting back in our bike and sent three test riders out on 40:1 fuel. Then, we switched the bikes to 60:1 and—voila!—the 60:1 ratio was better... The only jetting change we made was to go to a use the air screw to select a new pilot jet size." KTM has tuned their 250 two-strokes to run at 60:1 at least since the mid 2000's. You're supposed to be giving advice on jetting and haven't even checked the owner's manual for proper mix ratio on these bikes for over a decade? This really makes me question your opinions on bike tests which I've always highly regarded.

Always good to see a two stroke still being produced. This makes happy that I have 2017 xc250 after hearing of the breathing problems they have now with newer bikes

Thanks for the information on the 2019 KTM 250SX. I’ve gotten a lot of very valuable information from Motocross Action Magazine from 1992 till now. So thanks to all at Motocross Action.

YZ250 for me
I’ve owned both and I think the power curve on the YZ is soo much better for motocross.

Tm period!
Better everything and looks way better and has an electronic power valve and perfect suspension!
I bought a tm300mx $2000 cheaper than that orange pos or husky 250 and it included suspension work, graphics, oils, hr meter, polished frame, and a knowledgeable dealer to spend the day at the track tuning it while I rode it. Best customer service ever and if I need a part it’s at my door step next day

I had one for a few months. The power was all mid. Signed off fast an hard. Suspension was stiff an was tough to feel confident on. Ended up trading it for a 450 husky. An i have a yz250 if i still want to rip a smoker. If your looking to get this bike. Just be prepared ro work out some kinks.

In the real world, after riding both, the ktm/husky is overall a rediculously better bike then the yz

Just wish KTM would give up on WP suspension and go with Kayaba SS. Nothing better.

Also I'm hoping the 2020 model has FI and fuel maps like the SXF models.

Why buy a brand new bike and worry about the jetting, suspension etc???
Yz250 is perfectly dialed straight out of the box with the best suspension on the market and still cheaper.
I guess that's why Yamaha doesn't change the YZ.
They worry that they will make it worse 😂😂😂

Since the YZ, is basically the same in the last 10 years, or so...Y do they say it's not that far off from the SX ?? KTM, is constantly improving at least a bit every year...Is the YZ that good ?
