I don't think Alonso was a saint at the time, but this is just copium. McLaren should have won constructors' and drivers' championship that year, but in the end they lost both and had to pay an insane amount of fine for spying.

Interesting that Ron only signed Alonso in 2005 because he felt he was done one by the manager of Kimi. He wanted to re-sign Kimi for 2007 on a lower salary (same thing Macca wanted to do with Lewis in 2013) but Kimi's manager was not having any of it. When Kimi was signed for Ferrari, Ron's ego was hurt and as a result he went off and signed Alonso in December 2005 in a rush before the Kimi announcement, just to portray to the world that Kimi did not leave but Ron wanted Alonso instead. Had he actually waited, he may have realised he didn't need Alonso and Lewis would have been sufficient to head the title campaign with a good number 2 driver. That and poor man-management of Lewis and Fernando cost him in 2007.
