I think that we should demand a higher education reform. All majors should have an internship as part of their curriculum. Just like the Social Work and Nursing majors have.

To add input here, I graduated with a BA in Sociology: Social Services with a minor in Latin American Studies and Psychology. With my degree I thought I wanted to be a social worker, but I found level-entry jobs in mental health and social services which wasn't bad, but the pay may not always be the top best. I was drawn to research more and enrolled for my Master in Sociology. I paid out of pocket for my MA (took 5 years!) And with that I was able to move into teaching as an adjunct and work in fields with higher pay. Getting a degree is one thing, using what you learned and how to bring in in the job market is another. I made sure to use what I learned to apply it in every job I had and grow from there. My degrees have been working for me so far!

FYI- I paid my student loans which also paying for grad school out of pocket. Debt free!

Yes there are jobs in this field, but a lot of these jobs require actual experience which most don’t have. I think that’s the downside to sociology or degrees in general. I have almost a Masters in sociology and cannot get a job.

Everyone...EVERYONE tries to discourage the Sociology degree I'm going for. This video helped remind me why i dont need to listen to them. I want to push cities for equality and accountability, with the knowledge to back it up.

I feel like I've totally wasted my money getting a degree in Social when all I want to do is help people.

Sociology degree should include certification in the following fields
1. Grant writing and non profit management

2. Counseling

3. Data scientist (especially for post graduate degrees)

4. Teaching/teaching administration

5. Research in social/medical field for those with a stronger background in science

6. Urban planning

Tysm!! I really appreciate the time put in, I'm in year 13 (British version of...American seniors? I think?) So I'm kind stressing about what to do at uni HAHA. I really like ur positive attitude!! Its so annoying and ignorant when I see STEM people being like "ur so dumb ur not gonna get a job just give up" so ur attitude is really refreshing!

Honestly, if earning a decent salary is a priority why not learn the skills to do that (urban plannning, marketing, computer science etc. ) and read sociology books in your free time.

I want to say something about going to college to better your life. I have not one but two college degrees and work as a Security Guard patrolling floors. A degree is not needed to be a guard.

Look Here:

1. Sociology B. A. (Lehman College)
2. Liberal Arts & Sciences A. A. (City Tech)

All this academic training for nothing. I'm not knocking education and college. For example, if you like Sociology, don't stop at the four-year degree level. Sociology can lead to a decent job if you earn a Master's Degree or beyond. Otherwise, you are truly wasting your time and money. I hope this helps.

I have a Sociology B.A from Lehman College (1994). Sociology is useful in terms of employment AFTER graduate school. A four-year degree in this field is good enough for an entry-level position but that's about it.

I work as a security guard with two CUNY degrees and a third degree in Religious Education. College is overrated big time. I wasted my time, youth and money attending CUNY from 1986 through 1994.

Sociology did nothing for me. Basically, a college degree means to start and complete academic training. The degree itself DOES NOT impress an employer nor does it guarantee employment. My sociology degree has been collecting dust in the closet since 1994, honestly.

I'm a freshman in Sociology but the job prospects make me want to shift to Economics (I liked Economics more but the maths was too intimidating for me but I might have to just bite the bullet).

I'm planning on getting my bachelor's in sociology with the family track and working for CPS while I get my MSW.
