Russia might go to war with Norway - and NATO with it. The crisis centers around Svalbard, but it's bigger than most people realize.

Take a look at everything we've learned from Russia's war against Ukraine, and see why Norway may be Russia's most likely next target.

This video does a deep dive into Russia's and Norway's geography, military, history, and more.

One BIG problem with a Russian attack on Svalbard - especially by sea, is that the Russian Northern Fleet is based in a city that is supplied by only ONE ROAD. The ONLY way to reach there is a single road that is within EASY striking distance of Finland, which, of course, is now a NATO ally, and, along with Sweden and Norway, have been allied together as part of the Nordic Defence Cooperation. Between the 3 countries, Russia would have an EXTREMELY difficult time.

Russia: "We're going to invade Norway."
The entirety of Finland: "With what army?"

*Norway is a founding member of NATO* since 1949.
Russia would be committing suicide trying to invade, as Article 5 would massively overpower any Russian expeditionary force and wipe it out.

As for Norway's Border, Norway is a very tough nut to crack with defences set up specifically to deter Russia.

Nordics were allys even before nato. If russia tries to attack Norway or Svalbard it would face nordic wrath. Atleast nordics would hold the line until article 5 comes to use.

Svalbard is the site of the world's repository of DNA material for practically everything that is ecologically or economically important. Letting the Russians gain control of this facility would be disastrous.

Not likely, as they wouldn’t be fighting just Norway but the whole of NATO.

As a Norwegian myself, i think Russia would face the whole population of Norway and not just our military😂 We love our country and are willing to die for it like the viking days, til Valhalla!

They might have the bigger number, but even the Germans found out during WW2 how difficult Norway was to hold. The topography can remind you of Afghanistan. There's a lot of mountains, valleys, caves etc etc which makes it perfect for guerrilla warfare for someone who knows the terrain. There are a lot of choke points where the Norwegian Army already have plans in place to blow up bridges etc should such a scenario happen. Many bridges in Norway, especially in the north, are constructed with small hollowed out rooms for explosives in certain designated places. Besides, as a NATO nation they wouldn't have stood a chance anyway.

Clearly a bit of a slow news week if we're suggesting that NATO will just allow a member's sovereign territory to be annexed, completely undermining the entire basis of the alliance.

Norway is indeed preparing for war, according to the news. The government just came up with all the money that the military is asking for. More brigades will be established, which means more soldiers. More air defense around the country, more tanks, new submarines coming. Kongsberg and Nammo factories producing weapon systems, missiles and ammo around the clock, even though some of this will be sent to Ukraine. Government has even asked every Norwegian to have personal supplies in storage for a longer period of time. This is not a drill...

Invading Norway from the north is very difficult. Tanks go well on Finmarksvidda, but after that there are mountains and more mountains with lots of bridges. There are no railways in the north. You have to go all the way down to roughly the middle of Norway to find railway tracks. If the Russians were to attack Norway, I would probably think that they would attack us with missiles. Invading with infantry is unlikely because that would probably have been suicide. Bridges will be blown up and it would be very easy to take out columns of infantry when there is only one main road.

...and how should the Russians supply their mighty military there?

Russia's, already the worlds largest country but with a low population density, thirst for more country to occupy and ruin is ridiculous

Norway is very mountainous. It's not all about population size

If Russia is still struggling in Ukraine, I don’t see how they could possibly succeed invading any NATO country. Norway would be so much more difficult than the Baltic States.

Waiting finish video, but I don’t see how they would be able to transport enough troops. Not to mention the overmatch in the air.

A thought experiment of an extremely unlikely scenario. I get that creators may feel the need to create novel content. I’m entertained, if not better informed.

Just FYI, USA has 11 carrier strike fleets. Norway usually have to tell them to calm down rather than the opposite. A carrier even visited the port of Oslo not long ago. Then you have how far behind Russia has fallen in context of subs in general, but also attack subs. In context of both sea and air, Russia is weak.
