I’m a med student and I can share what has worked for me and using his method since forever. I developed it by centering my mind to walk into the direction I want it to go. Let’s say you’re driving in a highway and you see a hole. Do you pass through it? The next time you take that same route, you’ll definitely will remember the hole is there. The mind remembers more what hurts and causes challenges than the easy things that just pass by. I bet you didn’t remember if it was a white car next to you when you avoided the hole. The spikes in adrenaline deplete more quickly your glucose, and guess who loves glucose, your brain. Play games with you mind, just if it likes it. Answer complex and compound problems with multiple choices. Why is the best option and not the other? Are results better or just faster? If I need a quick diagnose, I rather chose the faster. But if I have time to work and provide a better outcome, should I seek for better or a faster result? I train in the gym almost every day and I always say something to my gym partner: Today we’ll do this exercise for three more sets just because we hate it. We hate it because if involves a lot of energy and maybe we can’t even finish our entire workout, but the results never fail be achieved in the least amount of time and with better results. We study and train hard, and we always have time for ourselves. Sleeping at the same time everyday is KING. Avoid having everything you use all the time in your room until you master the art of sleep. Just bring your phone and charge it facedown in the furthest corner. Use do not disturb modes when necessary. Avoid distractions that won’t guide you towards your current goal. Eat well, junk food is harder to digest, and this consumes more energy as well without rewarding you for the amount spent. Have your room clean and organized. Make it smell like your favorite flowers or whatever makes you feel comfortable. If you have a hard challenge, be your best version. I always have a haircut the day before my tests, wear my favorite socks, my favorite shoes, my favorite breakfast, my favorite coffee, my favorite perfume, my favorite watch, my favorite EVERYTHING. Nothin worse that not being comfortable with yourself while trying to learn something. Design your own game. Be your own fuel. I can type like 3000 more words, but I hope you read this and helps you understand your engine.

Higher Order Learning:
- integrate learned information with what you already know
- connect learned ideas together, connect them to bigger picture/purpose
- compare pieces of information.

How to do Higher Order Learning:
- Recognize when you are doing lower-order learning (ask yourself, "will I forget this later?" Try keeping a tally of how many times you drift into lower-order learning during a study session.)
- Categorize ideas based on their important relationships. (Use mind maps for notetaking).

Students that use his method are shown to acheive a level of learning in 1-2 weeks that would otherwise have taken them 4 weeks.

This method will take more effort, and you will cover the material at a slower pace. Do not let this convince you to give up.

Brain remember hurtful things better => test yourself and feel free to make mistakes => connect with other things, subjects.
Higher order learning = active learning: thinking back and forth.
Steps by steps for higher order thinking:
1. Understand your engine: count times you zone out during studying, which is when you find those information irrelevant. Try to reduce those times by connecting more and more info.
2. Group info: Find and compare info to form groups -> decide which one is more important.
3. Good note taking makes you to think.
Note: start with books for more times to think.

Based on what @Isabelle Grimesey wrote here 2 months ago:

Studying Vs. Learning

Higher Order Learning (HOL, also can be called Higher Level Learning) Vs. Lower Order Learning (LOL)

Taking Smart Notes

Learning is more complex, more profound, deeper, Than Studying.

Higher Order Learning: - integrate learned information with what you already know - connect learned ideas together, connect them to bigger picture/purpose - compare pieces of information. Better for retention.
Creating NETWORKS OF KNOWLEDGE. The more you learn, the knowledge becomes connected and you can use it better.

Lower Order Learning - no connection between subjects, learning definitions. Very tedious and boring.

How to do Higher Order Learning: - Recognize when you are doing lower-order learning (ask yourself, "will I forget this later?" Try keeping a tally of how many times you drift into lower-order learning during a study session.) - Categorize ideas based on their important relationships. (Use mind maps for notetaking).

Students who use this method are shown to achieve a level of learning in 1-2 weeks that would otherwise have taken them 4 weeks.

STEP 1 - Learning how the "engine" works
Learn the basics, the fundamentals of the subject. Make sure you know that on a good enough level to later use that to grow and use that for the more complex subjects.

STEP 2 - Group information together
Find relationships and group them together + think deeper, prioritize the relationship, and decide which groups of information is important to group and which isn't.
It's not always the same as the information that the lecturer is connecting together.
It will take more mental effort, but that's exactly what is HOL.

STEP 3 - Leverage your notes.
Make your notes meaningful. Good notes should help us think, not help us not to think about the subject.
Linear note taking - isn't good. Sequentially writing notes doesn't work.
Non-Linear note taking - For example Mind mapping
(More difficult while in a Live lecture, easier with recorder lecture or with a book or an article)

This method will take more effort, and you will cover the material at a slower pace. Do not let this convince you to give up.
Misinterpreted Effort Hypothesis - Thinking that if something takes too much effort, it also means it is not effective enough, so we stop doing that. But when it comes to learning - More effort is better according to research.
Is covering the material FASTER is what we want? That's just Studying. Studying and forgetting. That's a lower order learning, and Lower order Thinking. Don't study more, study smart - Learn.

I also came up with similar insights while I was learning physics..
Learning must be holistic and not isolated..

Justin has gotten a lot of backlash online. For teaching too many high school students or not giving enough practical insight in his YouTube videos.

I followed his YouTube channel for a year, trying everything he mentioned in the videos. Then about 4 months ago I decided to bite the bullet on his course since there’s a month refund policy. It was 100% worth it and life changing.

For reference, I’m in my 20s and have graduated with my undergraduate degree and am using his tools in Dental School.

He goes beyond just studying but into truly learning — whether it’s in school or general life. He teaches growth ideas that have made a far bigger difference than anything I’ve seen on YouTube. Actionable and theoretical tools for mindsets, skill development, learning processes…

He’s not perfect and the course isn’t perfect but I feel like there aren’t enough people mentioning just how life changing his material (on YouTube or the course) can be if you’re willing to put in a small amount of effort to actually learn it. It extends into your life beyond just making your school life better but better enabling you to build any skill you want to and to actually achieve your goals.

Thanks for the listen.

In a nutshell, always look for connections on everything you're learning so it's not "irrelevant"😤🔥

This is such an amazing talk, he talked about how important is to learn and not to study hard, our brains are created in such a way, that if we consider an information not valid (not worth knowing) enough we tend to forget immediately and we waste too much time restudying it.

The three key steps to learning (not studying) is LGL
Learning how the engine works (building the radar)
Gathering information together
Leverage note taking.

Learning the how the engine works: the two major techniques from his teachings are higher order technique and lower order technique, the lower order is technique is when you learn things in isolation, learning things that you are not familiar with ( i.e something you have no idea of and you are just inserting it in a sense in your brain) which is mentioned most people do and very not efficient at all, while the higher order technique is when you learn at ease and tried connecting it with the past things you learnt before and thinking about it to understand deeply and create greater connections with it.

Gathering information together as I mentioned earlier is thinking about it and learning it through the process.

On leverage note taking he mentioned some people learn in different ways not by the way authors write it or teacher teach it, he mentioned if you are not trying to think about it and you are just dumping it in your notebooks then you are not learning at all, which has really affected our learning process a lot we depend on notes to keep vital info rather than our active brain to keep for us.

Thank you justin!!!!, you are such a blessing!

This is how I used to study even before knowing about the HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILLS thing but I gave up cuz it didn't match the conventional way of learning stuff and also cuz it was a very timetaking process
Good to know that I was doing the right thing and now I won't ever go back to the conventional stuff thanks Justin🙏

Thinking about thinking = Metacognition

Common Methods = Common Results

HOTS :

Higher Order Learning

information is Integrated not Isolated

lower Learning : Isolated --- > Memorizing, fact, information

High Order Learning S : Relevant sehingga Retained (dipertahankan)

Lower Order Learning S : Irrelevant > Forget

Tidak ada Penelitaian yang memastikan/bersepakat bagaimana definisi, proses dan kriteria HOLS

Steps :

8:10
1. Learn How the Engine Works
a. Feeling HOLS vs LOLS

3. Leverage your Note Taking
good note taking help brain think not avoid think
Knowledge is note linear - Write seperti yang kamu inginkan
Non Linear Note Taking - Mind Map - Diagram Gambar
Menggambar dan menulis catatan HLOS sangat Custom sehingga pemilihan gambar, ketebalan garis, warna garis setiap bagian catatan sangat penting.
Most Effective Strategi = Most Effort

Studying is not the same as learning. To truly learn, we need to understand and integrate knowledge, not just memorize facts. Many students struggle with studying effectively, leading to anxiety and inconsistent results. By improving metacognition (thinking about thinking), we can gain more control over our learning process. Higher order thinking skills, which involve connecting information and seeing the bigger picture, can greatly enhance learning. Linear note-taking should be replaced with non-linear methods that allow for the formation of groups and relationships. These strategies require more effort but lead to more efficient learning and better retention. It is important to prioritize learning over studying and to understand that higher order learning is more time-efficient in the long run. Don't just study more; learn smarter.

Up to now, study was my metaphor for learning. But this video made me realise that learning is more effective than only studying.😊
