The Vela pulsar, also known as PSR B0833-45, is one of the most studied pulsars in the sky, located in the Vela constellation. It was formed from the remnants of a supernova explosion that occurred approximately 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. Pulsars are highly magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit beams of electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves, X-rays, and gamma rays, which sweep across the sky as the star rotates.
The Vela pulsar spins incredibly fast, completing about 11.2 rotations per second, which is relatively slow compared to some other pulsars. Its rotation period is gradually increasing due to the loss of rotational energy over time. This energy loss is mainly attributed to the emission of electromagnetic radiation and the emission of relativistic particles from its magnetic poles.
The Vela pulsar's intense magnetic field, which is approximately a trillion times stronger than Earth's magnetic field, accelerates charged particles near its surface to nearly the speed of light, producing powerful beams of radiation. These beams are observed as regular pulses of radiation, hence the term "pulsar."
