Pleasant though this is, it should not be confused with LIGHT MUSIC or passed off as such. True light music can be be listened to and not exclusively used as a background. It started with the lighter moments of classical music - Strauss waltzes, polkas, overtures, tangos, novelties, descriptive pieces - some fast, some slow but generally inspired by the musical construction of classical music, but generally short and to the point - and full of inventive tunes that stay in your mind. It is a type of music of which most young people unaware, having been virtually ignored by broadcasters and record companies for fifty years. However, back in the fifties it was the main musical out put of the BBC.
